New Zealand is to hold a binding referendum in 2016 on whether to change the national flag.
The announcement by Prime Minister John Key of the referendum came after his government last month won a third term in a general election.
A panel of "respected New Zealanders" will lead the public discussion on potential designs for a new flag.
Mr Key has previously said he would like to see a new flag featuring a silver fern, on a black background.
That would be similar to the banner already used by many New Zealand teams such as the All Blacks national rugby union team.

Does this mean that they`re goona take the kangaroo off?
I hope they keep the beautiful southern cross / Union Jack design.
Was 1967 the year that “O Canada” replaced “God Save The Queen” as the national anthem?
Four stars represent the constellation of the Southern Cross (similar to the southern hemisphere as Polaris the north star is to the northern hemisphere).
The fact that it is indeed representative of the cross likely also has some impact.
My Grandfather fought at Gallipoli and the Somme under that flag, I don’t think he would have approved a change.
"O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; ... The lyrics were originally in French and translated into English in 1906.[1] Robert Stanley Weir wrote in 1908 another English version, which is the official and most popular version, one that is not a literal translation of the French. Weir's lyrics have been revised twice, taking their present form in 1980, but the French lyrics remain unaltered. "O Canada" had served as a de facto national anthem since 1939, officially becoming Canada's national anthem in 1980 when the Act of Parliament making it so received Royal Assent and became effective on July 1 as part of that year's Dominion Day celebrations.
ok but that is kinda wierd. any country south of the equator i guess can see it so it’s not unique to zed. so now it’s a fern. i think the kiwis like ferns. I always felt that the country was kind of a puffder country. altho they rescue alot of stranded boats at sea. i parked myself on the beach at queenstown under an incredible clear night with some beers from the hotel. what a sight.
thx for the info i did another post about how wierd to have the scross as your flag as its not unique to zed. so fern makes sense. i think the kiwi’s live in the ferns.
