(Reuters) - Poland's parliamentary speaker, Radoslaw Sikorski, has been quoted as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to Poland's then leader in 2008 that they divide Ukraine between themselves.

Russia knew after Ukraine’s color revolution that it was essentially lost.
Its reconciled itself to that and wanted nothing apart from historically Russian Crimea.
As for the Donbass, there was always going to be a split, with or without Russian support.
The economic downturn the Kremlin faces would have happened with or without sanctions but its not going to force Russia to reverse course.

To dictators like Putin and Obama elections don’t matter much, they just slow the agenda a bit.
