Woman is thrown out of Paris opera after cast refused to perform unless she removed Muslim veil

France's Socialist government today pledged to toughen up its anti face-covering law after a veiled Muslim woman was ejected from a major Paris opera house. In an incident which has divided opinion in the city's liberal arts community, cast members performing La Traviata 'objected strongly' to the presence of a woman in the audience wearing a niqab-type veil.

'A singer spotted her in the front row during the second act,' said Jean-Philippe Thiellay, director of the Bastille Opera, which was opened by Socialist president Francois Mitterand in 1989.

Front row?

She must belong to a wealthy owner.

“She (if it was a she) could blow herself up....”

.
Don’t be so impatient — such an event will happen sooner or later. It is a very popular method used in the ME to spread terror in the general public.

And when enough of them occur and the number of dead and wounded start to rise, the American people MAY just wake up to the fact that they are besieged by an enemy that lives among them.

The alarm clock is about to go off.

"You obviously don’t know anything about Islam."

Actually, whenever I hear about a new or proposed law, I don't think about "Islam" first. My very first thought, which I believe should be the first thought of ALL free men and women is this:

"Would I want that law enforced against ME?"

My very NEXT thought is then:

"What is the next logical extension of that law, since all laws develop 'mission creep'."

So, no, I am reluctant to cede personal freedom for actions that on their own do not interfere with the rights of others.

Some other fat guy once said:

"Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one."

And us "Fat Guys" have to stick together...

My Dad fought in France in WWII to free the world against Nazi oppression. I’m an old, sick fella at this point, but I will be glad to take a few of these sobs down before I go if it ever comes to my door.

GOOD. Shoulda stopped her at the front door to begin with.

It's possible she put on the veil once inside.

So you would be comfortable on stage with a bunch of the audience with hooded clothes and full face covering?

The picture of a woman with full face covering that is with the article says that it is NOT a pic of the woman involved.

I find that quite humorous.

This is in France, not America.

Let the French use their laws to persuade the Muzzies to leave and go back to their third world hellholes.

If I wandered into a bar and discover it to be filled with Leather Jacketed Bikers that look like trouble, I would leave.

If I was about to board a flight, and saw large numbers of "Muslim Garbed" individuals getting on board, I might very well exercise the option to take a later flight.

What I am far more uncomfortable with is a Government that can tell me what to wear, when I can wear it when I am going about my private life. That means not on a job serving the public, just my own free time, out and about.

Would you be comfortable out and about at say, something like a State Fair, when a security guard comes up to you and tells you to remove your Sunglasses and Hat or Scarf, because it interferes with the facial recognition software the crowd is being scanned with? That is one of the arguments being proposed here. If you accept its premise, then you cannot object when the authorities come to dictate your garments under that reasoning.

"They have something to hide" is another argument proposed here.

Did you cheer Apple's recent stance on encrypting phone data? If so, why? OBVIOUSLY only people with "something to hide" want their phone data encrypted.

People applaud laws when they are perceived to "stick it to THEM". What people often fail to think through is how quickly THEM becomes US.

"This is in France, not America..."

True that, and the people of France are able to make law as they see fit, no argument from me.

However, judging by the enthusiastic response from posters here, many would not mind enacting such a law in the U.S.

I am being the cautionary voice that says, "Be careful what you wish for, you might actually get it."

So what's the problem? You can clearly see his face for later identification? ;-)

As the clash of civilizations between the Free West and Sharia Islam heats up once again we find that some libertarians are more interested in fighting the heirs of Charles Martel than they are the heirs of Mohammed.

The old story of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Okay, I probably wouldn't want that law enforced against you. Some things seen cannot be unseen. It's possible that after seeing the woman I might not want that law enforced against her.

But the fact remains that France has a problem with Muslims, and the veil is a terrorist tool. And it's an oppression of women. And France has a right to pass laws banning the veil in public places. And the performers have a right to refuse to perform if they feel unsafe.

Of course!

But when the Muzzies make life for Americans difficult like they have the French you’ll see Americans push for similar laws.
