From a globally lauded athlete to convicted killer, Oscar Pistorius' fall from grace culminated Tuesday with a five-year sentence in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
The sentence was imposed for the charge of culpable homicide, which in South Africa means a person was killed unintentionally, but unlawfully.
Under South African law, he will have to serve at least one-sixth of his sentence -- 10 months -- before he can ask to be considered for parole.

Only 5 years for murder, and he might be out in 10 months????!!! It sounds like the American judicial system ...
Kangaroo courts exist everywhere.
I don’t think so. His judge has a tough reputation.
Is the judge on the parole board?
Unlike the American criminal court system, South Africa is judge-based.
I’m surprised he got any time after listening to some of judges pre-sentence readings. The defense wanted no time because he has suffered enough already and doesn’t have a girl friend to comfort him.
He needs to go to a special jail because he can’t see two feet in front of him.
The Rich can get away with murder. South Africa at least acknowledges that a crime was committed. Ted Kennedy never even went to trial.
Pistorius is Famous. I don’t know whether he’s Rich or not.
About a million US in real estate and 600K in annual earnings, although if that sports/endorsement related that’s surely gone now. His girlfriend supported her family and they are supposedly negotiating with him for a settlement.
Disgusting. Only a moron could believe a burglar would climb into a tiny toilet compartment of a bedroom
” doesnt have a girl friend to comfort him.”
Actually, I think he does
Utterly pathetic. S Africa now stands worldwide as a sad joke.
Moron or genius, in a hynagogic fog one might believe all manner of implausible things, remnants of vivid dreams mixed with ordinary perception — the defense’s narrative did involve waking up out of sleep and believing Ms. Steenkamp was still asleep in bed. The judge who heard all the evidence (unlike you and me) regarded it as sufficiently plausible as to acquit on murder, but rightly (it seems to me) held that using a firearm and killing someone while in such a state is criminally culpable.
Hynagogic (sic) fog my aching hynd end.
He's a vicious, vengeful megalomaniac who has now tasted blood. He'll kill again before the decade is out.
A hynagogic fog?
What utter crap.
He tried to claim innocence, but he was defeeted.
Again, I remind you that judge, unlike any of us posting here, heard all the evidence, and from what I can tell the prosecuting attorney made the case for your point of view very well and very forcefully. The judge in the case has, as I understand it, a very good reputation in South Africa for thoroughness, toughness and fairness, and we might all do well not to second-guess her from afar.
I don’t need you to remind me of anything, Hynagog.
Send your girlfriend the judge a bouquet if you feel the need to celebrate this version of justice.
Send one to Pistorius too. Maybe he’ll reply with an autograph in blood.
