A review by Germany's foreign intelligence agency has found that MH17 was brought down by a missile fired by separatists. Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the plane's downing.
A detailed analysis conducted by Germany's federal intelligence service (BND) concluded that separatists near Donetsk were responsible for bringing down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the news magazine Spiegel reported on Sunday.
The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 while on route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 passengers on board were killed, most of them Dutch nationals.
BND President Gerhard Schindler presented the agency's findings, including satellite images and diverse photo evidence, to members of the parliamentary control committee responsible for monitoring the work of German intelligence on October 8.
According to Spiegel, the BND has intelligence suggesting that pro-Russian separatists captured a BUK air-defense missile system at a Ukrainian military base, and fired a missile on July 17 that exploded in the vicinity of the Malaysian aircraft.
International leaders and Ukraine's government have accused the separatists of firing at the commercial airliner with weapons supplied by Russia. Moscow has blamed Ukraine's military.
"It was pro-Russian separatists," Spiegel quoted Schindler as saying. According to the magazine, he also told the panel that the BND's review had come up with unambiguous findings - for example, that claims from Russia that the missile had been fired by Ukrainian soldiers and that a fighter jet had been flying close to the Malaysian airliner were false.
A spokesman for the German Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe told Spiegel that an investigation has been opened into unknown perpetrators because of the possibility that the downing constituted a war crime.

How about releasing the report to the public Fritz?
This is a German propaganda piece intended to absolve Putin and the Russian government of responsibility for the murder of 298 people. Note, no mention of who the rebels are, who controls their actions or who their goals might align with. The general impression is that the Ukrainian government should have taken better care not to have their air defense missiles captured.
Also note, the last report blamed the crash on "large number of high-energy objects". This report blames those rascally rebels, whoever they are. The final report, due out after the winter heating season, will probably contain some criticism of Russia without being too harsh on the EU's great trading partner but that's just speculation.
Immediately after the plane was struck, separatists were crowing about having shot down a military transport plane. I forget the type of plane, but it had the exact same shape, just much smaller, as the passenger jet. I never had any doubt that separatists shot it down. But what is key is that the plane flew over a war zone, and was mistaken for a military plane.
I went looking for the news story I just reported. Instead, I found this incredible news story: what the UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT claims proves that the rebels shot down the MH17, but also proves it was a MISTAKE, not part of some grand Putin conspiracy to slaughter innocent people.

Notice the careful wording. They captured a missile system and fired a missile. No specification that they fired the missile fron the captured launcher; just that they did both. So if they fired from a Russian supplied the launcher which was used, the German author can still imply that the blame lies with Ukraine for leaving a launcher lying around.
I still want to know where the launcher was hidden after the attack. That was stashed away very quickly in someone's neighboring country.
“pro-Russian separatists captured a BUK air-defense missile system at a Ukrainian military base, and fired a missile on July 17 that exploded in the vicinity of the Malaysian aircraft.”
It’s not a damn .22!
You don’t just aim and fire a BUK.
It takes quite a bit of training.
Regular RUSSIAN military fired the weapon!
~Regular RUSSIAN military fired the weapon!~
Do you really think there are no people capable to do it in Ukraine?
I really think Putin wouldn’t let go control of such weapons, and NO, I don’t think “pro-Russian separatists” just happen to have such training and control.
Ukraine has systems like that too. You just have no idea on how many weapons like this are in that part of the world.
They have come up with a way to blame all parties, that’s remarkable. Just a question: Who trained these Ukrainians citizens how to acquire a target and shoot?
Last time I’ve check Ukraine has a military too. More than half defected in occupied and disputed areas.
