Caribbean, South American Countries Close Borders to Combat Ebola

Colombia, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago have all announced travel bans as Ebola concerns grow.

Colombian authorities announced that anyone entering their country from Ebola-stricken countries will face heavy scrutiny. Colombia’s National Health Institutes have said they developed a questionnaire to determine who should be under suspicion of potentially having contact with Ebola. Colombian newspapers have reported that some have already been detained due to the newly instituted executive actions. Fernando Ruiz, Colombia’s vice minister of health, said of the reports, “The cases are not suspicious. They are simply people who have traveled to places where Ebola is present. That is the reason for their medical observation.” He added, “The three cases are not under strict surveillance. Their temperature is measured two times a day for 21 days. At this moment, we are not alerted or worried. The individuals seem healthy. Two of them already completed their observation period.”

The Jamaican government on Thursday authorized an immediate travel ban against persons traveling from the Ebola-affected nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Jamaican authorities said that anyone who has traveled into the three West African countries in the last twenty-eight days is forbidden from entering their country. Jamaican citizens who have traveled to the African lands within the past twenty-eight days will be subject to quarantine.

On Thursday, the government of Trinidad and Tobago banned entry to visitors arriving from several African countries which have had documented Ebola infections. Trinidad and Tobago Health Minister Dr. Fuad Khan said that anyone arriving from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, or Nigeria will be forbidden from entry. Citizens who have traveled to those countries within the past six weeks will be quarantined for 21 days, the Health Ministry reported.

Yay. Haiti, next, I hope. It’s so crowded that it would be a horrible place to contain an outbreak.

By Obola’s logic, these countries are now
in serious danger of an outbreak. They’ve
increased the danger to all of us. /s

It was the stupidest political move to have gotten behind the idea of not stopping flights from there!

The purposely chose to be against such a simple thing that would have not been seen as a negative to 99% of mainstream Americans. Now they look like idiotic out-of-touch goons that are purposely endangering Americans just to be politically correct.

I was planning on a trip to South America (perhaps Colombia) I would be very upset if I was banned for being from an Ebola nation because of this idiot President we have.

Obama could get us and our products banned if he turns us into what west africa is today.

Which of course proves that Obama wants Ebola. Its part of his plan to humble America. Impeach! Imprison! Guillotine! Mayor Emanuel’s brother (Dr. Mengle) must be so proud.

Do you ever wonder how one side of an island can thrive while the other side is a dank sewer of despair? I mean I don't hear stories of disease and starvation from the Dominican Republic.

When you fly over the island, you can tell, even without knowing geography, which side is which. The Haitian side looks brown and barren. I’ve been on several short term mission trips to the Dominican Republic (DR). Poverty, crime, disease and hunger exist there. I don’t know all the answers, but maybe our tour guide of the old city of Santo Domingo had a good grasp of the answer. He said: “We are grateful to the Spaniards, because they brought us Jesus. He replaced the gods who required sacrifices of children. We are grateful to President Kennedy, because he brought us democracy and freedom.” Haiti has primarily lived under a dicatorship, and practices voodoo. The DR has primarily lived under a democracy, and is predominantly Christian.

Racist fools & crypto colonialists.

Don't they realize they're exacerbating the problem?

Questionnaires accomplish little or nothing. When you play hardball with a serious epidemic, people who enter the country are quarantined for a month.

It’s done with a buffer system, broken down by weeks. People who have just arrived are put in the first week camp and watched very carefully. They are kept far apart from each other so the first camp is the largest.

Second week camp is a lot more relaxed, with families reunited. They are provided with many normal amenities, and get brief medical checks before proceeding.

Third and fourth camp is where they are allowed to communicate with locals they know, and to handle administrative matters like processing paperwork.

Has Obola yet said why he thinks a travel ban is “not the right thing to do”?
