Reid rejects Ebola travel ban proposal

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Friday rejected a call for travel bans from Ebola-ravaged West Africa, suggesting that it was too early for such a move.

“We have a lot of people in Sierra Leone and in places like Liberia who are dual citizens,” the Nevada Democrat said in Henderson. “If there was a ban they would just fly to smaller countries before coming here.”

House Republicans had called for such a travel ban at a congressional hearing Thursday. President Barack Obama rejected the proposal on Friday.

Reid also backed the Obama administration’s approach to the deadly, expressing faith in just-appointed Ebola Czar Ron Klain’s ability to do an “outstanding job” combating the fast-moving disease.

The horse is still mostly in the barn. Why would we need to close the barn door now?

I’ve been thinking that this reluctance to close the borders to potentially infected people is part of the hard-wiring the left received during the 70s and 80s (and beyond) in their college American history classes.

At the time, one of the most popular books on every American history reading list was a relatively brief tome called, “The Invasion of America” (Jennings). Among Jennings’ theses was the idea that during the first century or so of New World exploration by the Europeans, it is estimated that approximately 20 million native Americans died, not from wars with the explorers, but from diseases carried from Europe against which the indigenous population had no immunity.

Whether that 20 million figure is accurate, I don’t know. And I have never heard it adequately explained why the so-called “invaders” didn’t suffer from indigenous diseases for the same reason—a lack of immunity.

Whatever the truth of the matter is, an invasion of America through the transmission of viruses may be considered payback on the part of the Left. Our biological chickens coming home to roost, so to speak. Obviously we deserve to die because of what we, the white population of Europe, “did” to the indigenous people of America three centuries ago.

I’m not saying that the average left leaning individual believes that in any explicit sense, though, no doubt, some do. Instead it is merely a part of their intellectual DNA— white America deserves whatever it gets. That the carriers of this form of historical “payback” are from west Africa is just icing on the cake.

Works for me. Haven't we heard that argument before?

They would just find another way to do what they want or go where they want.

Idiot. A real travel ban would take that into account by requiring some period of time from their leaving an outbreak locale--say a minimum of 21 days--before allowing them to come here. Let Brussels be the quarantine center. Play that stupid tune somewhere else, Mr. Reid.

Harry reveals so much ignorance in one statement.

There are no direct flights from these countries to America. They all have to travel through some other countries before coming here. Duncan traveled through Brussels, Belgium before he flew to Dulles and then on to Dallas-Ft. Worth.

You have to ban entrants from these countries, no matter whatever other nation they traveled through to get to America.

Hey Hopalong! How many Americans are going to have to die before it isn't "too early" anymore? Personally, I think all of those coming here from Africa to receive "treatment" paid for by the American taxpayers should be flown directly to Nevada before it is decided where to send them.

Just an admission that our goobamint is powerless to control things, though they’d like to have us think that they can.

I don’t know if the handling of Ebola will become an election campaign issue. But the American people are getting a good view of what happens when liberals are in charge of your government. There is reluctance to take common sense action such as banning travel from these countries. And the people are seeing that liberals are the ones against that move, while conservatives are the ones calling for this common sense measure. Will it change minds on election day? We’ll see.

if they stop the flights people will naturally clamour for the government to also stop the Central American child invasion.

for electoral reasons of course the Dems don’t want that.

DIMocRATs kill unborn children through abortion, kill seniors through death panels, kill Veterans through neglect, kill American children through resettling people from central America who spread respiratory illness, kill through allowing illegal alien invaders here so they can murder through their crimes...and now...kill through allowing aliens in who have ebola. Ghouls. The Party of Death.

Of course he does. It’s not rocket science.

Any ban on immigration Kills Obola’s amnesty in December.

Democrats are the party of power. When the home base hates you, create a new base.
