The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital worker boarded the commercial cruise ship Sunday from Galveston, Texas.
At the time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had not updated its monitoring requirements, and required only self-monitoring, said Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for the State Department.
"The hospital employee and traveling partner have voluntarily remained isolated in a cabin," Psaki said. "We are working with the cruise line to safely bring them back to the United States out of an abundance of caution."
The Belize government turned down a request by the United States to evacuate the worker through the international airport in Belize City.
"We remain in close contact with U.S. officials ... we have maintained the position that when even the smallest doubt remains, we will ensure the health and safety of the Belizean people," the government said in a statement.

Obviously, our leader is clueless and incompetent. As for the self-monitoring - what the hell is wrong with their minds? Selfish, entitled — no common sense. Geeze, we’re doomed if this is how the majority think.
Totally misleading headline. I thought Belize just allowed her ashorefor quarantine in Belize, proper, but that is not so.
The passengers are now at risk for more than just salmonella.
What I read earlier this morning is the passenger (& boyfriend or husband) had been put on a ship tender to Belize to fly out but was refused permission into Belize........the ship was refused to dock.....(can you imagine little Belize turning away all those tourist dollars, over 3000 people!!)
....and last I heard, the ship was refusing to allow them back on????
What’s with these unprofessional selfish people? Treat someone with ebola...then go on a well-deserved cruise!!!!!! What simpletons!
Seems like everyone who handled the patients are travelling everywhere right afterwards . .
Just like Duncan..
NAW Must be my twisted, conspiracy conflicted mind :^)

Belize knows what to do the US does not. Whats wrong with that picture?
Everything the Clown Prince nobola administration does is intentional...EVERYTHING.
Because our entire Government and the Propaganda Wing of the Democrat Party [sometimes referred to as the Main Stream Media] are in a politically correct induced coma or brain dead from an overdose on party aganda brownies.
“Out of an abundance of caution” needs a drinking game. Anyone else sick and tired of hearing that phrase?
How stupid and selfish are these nurses who are potentially spreading Ebola around the world? Can they not reason it out themselves that they need to stay put? It’s not everyone else’s fault if she didn’t get travel insurance. One would think a phone call to the cruiseline explaining why she needed a refund would be gladly given by them rather than risk 4000 souls and seriously bad publicity.
If they did, in fact, voluntarily restrict themselves to their cabin, it was probably only after the passengers and crew found out who the hell they were. They voluntarily chose to not to be thrown overboard.
doesn’t it? It is just nuts! health workers should know better than others the dangers of this disease and staying put until they know that they absolutely don’t have it and can’t give it to someone else. It’s not that hard. My mother was telling me on the phone last night about what she had to go thru back in the day with childhood diseases like whooping cough and polio. She and her sister got whooping cough. There was a quarrantine sign on the door and when they were well enough to leave the house, they wore armbands for a certain length of time to notify others that they might be carrying disease. She thinks what’s going on now is a lack of discipline or self-denial, if you will. Her generation of people had that. Today, not so much.
The CDC is really taking this whole Ebola thing lightly arent they?
They are depending on the regular airline cleaning crew to have disinfected the airplanes the nurse flew on after she got off. These planes flew for a couple of more days before they were taken out of service for a serious disinfection.
They are also assuming the cleaning crew themselves did not get infected during their cleaning of the planes.
With CDC in charge of stopping this outbreak from becoming an epidemic our best bet is prayer.
The CDC has been making an awfully lot of assumptions. We will find out how accurate those assumptions have been within the next 2-3 weeks.
Well, one thing we know for sure-they told us that it couldn’t happen here because we had such a good health care system and any hospital could handle it.
That assumption has proven to be inaccurate. We have had 2 health care workers infected and hundreds with potential exposure. We’ll be lucky if there are no more cases from this chain of transmission.
In addition, it is not comforting that the nurse was not even considered to be in the high risk group. How’s that for the CDC being correct?
With a disease that kill over 50% of its victims and is highly contagious it doesnt take too many bad assumptions to add up to overwhelmed hospitals and full morgues.
