The leader of U.S. military efforts to fight ISIS in Iraq says the terror group came within 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of the Baghdad airport.
Offering what appeared to be previously unreported details, Gen. Martin Dempsey told ABC's "This Week" that the United States had to risk bringing in low-flying attack helicopters to keep ISIS at bay.
"The tool that was immediately available was the Apache [helicopter]. The risk of operating in a hostile environment is there constantly," the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
"You're not going to wait until they're climbing over the wall," Dempsey said. "Had [ISIS forces] overrun the Iraqi unit, it was a straight shot to the Baghdad airport. So, we're not going to let that happen."

All our military efforts there have gone up in smoke.
This is a repeat of Vietnam.
Our military won the war, and politicians lost the peace.
Fasten your seat belts - dont fall off your chair at the end.
What is the range of the Apache? Won’t they be land based, probably near Baghdad....and hopefully guarded. Guarded by...troops on the ground.
If they bring in helicopters, its practically a land war.
When Obama gets serious, B-52’s will be dropping significant tonnage instead of this penny ante stuff.
pull out and nuke it from orbit
Democrat congress abandoned Vietnam. Democrat President abandoned Iraq.
Boots on the ground and we just don't know it? (Except for the SF guys and CIA spooks who are already there, of course, we're not supposed to know about them.)
Arc Light with Napalm.
Now the white hut group are allowing isis free run in Iraq.
But are training 82nd Air Born troops to FIGHT EBOLA. I’m wondering why????
Unless the military takes over the “fight” with ISIS, something will be done to re-free Iraq. Obama is a golfing pRESIDENT, he is Not a serious person.
In time, my friend, in time.
I looked it up, and the range is 250-300 miles...but they can refuel. I’m still not convinced these aircraft are being launched from a ship though...and their fuel, maintenance people, parts, etc. are in Iraq somewhere. Heck, if we anticipate that an airplane pilot may eventually get shot down, we’d better have a helicopter base in Iraq to launch a rescue mission from.
Its not all just CIA and SF there either. Per this story, at least 200 troops in Iraq right now are from Fort Riley:
Its actually a nightmare scenario, since these troops are the furthest thing possible from SF. They are mostly a headquarters unit. And the story didn’t mention a movement of equipment...after all, these soldiers will just be ‘advisors’. So when ISIS attacks Baghdad, these guys will be holed up in the embassy, armed with M-16’s - hopefully they’ll have ammunition.
And its worth mentioning that unlike Saigon, Baghdad is a hell of a long way from the safe refuge of a ship, or even a friendly nation. Refueling of helicopters for a mass exodus probably can’t be organized and relied upon. It would be best to have an airport...in fact our last stand should be at the airport, lest 200 soldiers from Fort Riley get their heads chopped off. So, of course we’re standing by while ISIS is about to capture the airport :(
None of this makes any sense.
They will not be stopped. Its all part of the plan.
fox reporting kobani and anbar have fell to isis and now over 10k isis surrounding baghdad : /
Mike
Pray for the people of Kobani. Good grief.
The entire reason that groups have to resort to terrorism is that the US is superior on the battlefield. In particular, we demonstrated in the first gulf war how easily we could tear apart an organized army in the wide open desert. How on earth are these ISIS groups moving around in fleets of pickup trucks, in the open desert, without being detected and destroyed.
It is hard to believe that our influence with Turkey is so miniscule, and our armed forces are so impotent against ISIS. Its almost as if somebody is trying to be ineffective.
A lot of heads will be chopped off today.
now i see some conflicting reports..so im not sure if anyone knows exactly who has control of what..not good if baghdad falls imo
Mike
She’s pitiful and is pretty shallow too.
