The Seattle City Council has voted unanimously to celebrate “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” on the same day as Columbus Day, the federally recognized holiday, reports the Associated Press (AP). According to the AP report, the resolution that passed on Monday declares “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” the second Monday of October and intends to honor the contributions and culture of Native Americans and the indigenous community in Seattle. Supporters of the action said it will recognize the rich history of people who have inhabited the area for hundreds of years. "This action will allow us to bring into current present day our valuable and rich history, and it's there for future generations to learn," said Fawn Sharp, president of the Quinault Indian Nation on the Olympic Peninsula, and president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.

That was an awesome show.

I lived there for 45 years and moved to rural KY three years ago. This type of thing is one of the reasons why.

Everyone who thinks so called native americans were always here are too stupid to waste time explaining facts.

That’s true, and it explains a parallel I’ve seen here with the Aumish.

You see, they don’t use electricity but they DO use something they call “DC”. What is that, you may ask?

It’s 12 volt DC ELECTRICITY. But since they think electricity is evil, if you try to even explain to them why both are electricity, they won’t get it. It is, quite literally because, since they consider it evil, they don’t want to know about evil, so they in essence don’t want to know what you are trying to explain to them and fight gaining the knowledge.

I’m discovering the same thing is true with all sorts of things. Liberals suffer from it a LOT, and conservatives can do it as well. Just not as much.

Like a city council can overturn a federal holiday.

If a community organizer can ignore federal rules and make up his own, then why not?

Does anyone REALLY celebrate Columbus Day? (aside from unionized and .gov employees)

It’s just an excuse for privileged workers to have a day off. I personally don’t give a rat’s ass about Columbus. He didn’t even land in the CONUS. Why does our country even celebrate him? Well, I basically answered my own question myself with the first sentence in this paragraph.

Columbus day should rank with Ground Hog or St. Patrick’s Day when it comes to ‘holidays’.

I’m generally skeptical of holidays, except for a very select few: Independence Day(celebrating what’s left of our freedom) - even though it’s on the wrong day, Halloween, Thanksgiving(for family and friends), and Christmas(for the kids).

To me the rest of the ‘holidays’ are just an excuse for people to be off work. We shouldn’t need ‘special’ days to honor veterans, or be nice to our significant others. That should be done in some degree or another, EVERY day.

/rant off

“It’s just an excuse for privileged workers to have a day off.”

You nailed it. If these numbnuts were really sincere about this, they would simply cancel the “holiday” which no one but public sector employees get, anyway, and go to work. But NO!, the unions fought for the day off and, by god, they will have it. Hypocrites.

I’ll bet if they could have a hate whitey day they’d feel better. Then again, that’s every day in this great, diverse, vibrant nation of ours.

I, for one, am happy about what Seattle is doing. Thank you, city council, for celebrating my kind. I am an indigenous person. I was born in America, so therefore I am a native American.

Even though I have never scalped anyone or got drunk at a tribal casino, I am just as much a native American as Senator Elizabeth Warren and all the commie idigenistas on the Left Coast.

Once in a while Russell Means has a line that makes sense. One time he was picking on the politically correct term “Native American”. His expressed view was if you were born in this country, you are a Native American.

Here's a pic of Vladimir Lenin which stands in an area near Seattle called Fremont.

I had a whiff of this PC crap some years ago. An article reported that Seattle was going to erect a park statue in honor of a 9-year-old Japanese girl who was killed in the Hiroshima bombing (They mentioned her name). (Guilt Trip! BAD America!)

I wrote the reporter and asked her if Seattle was also going to erect a statue to honor a 9-year-old Hawaiian girl who was killed in the Pearl Harbor bombing (I mentioned her name).

The reporter wrote back "I didn't know that any civilians were killed there".

I just sat there, bumping my head against the monitor over the stupidity of the media.

Then do you think they are also US citizens?
using that as a definition IMO muddles things.

Means sometimes has some moments of clarity. In this case he was obviously taking aim at the political correctness. No pun intended.

He also has a somewhat unique position that after a final settlement with the tribes, the reservations should be on their own economically. If they thrive or fail would then be entirely up to them. If they fail, too bad, as in choices —>consequences. He would really like to see the Bureau of Indian Affairs done away with.

Keep in mind that I am not a Russell Means fan. He does however have some libertarian views that I find interesting.
