Iraqi officials have issued a desperate plea for America to bring US ground troops back to the embattled country, as heavily armed Islamic State militants came within striking distance of Baghdad.
Amid reports that Isil forces have advanced as far as Abu Ghraib, a town that is effectively a suburb of Baghdad, a senior governor claimed up to 10,000 fighters from the movement were now poised to assault the capital. The warning came from Sabah al-Karhout, president of the provisional council of Anbar Province, the vast desert province to the west of Baghdad that has now largely fallen under jihadist control.
The provinces two main cities, Fallujah and Ramadi, were once known as the graveyard of the Americans, and the idea of returning there will not be welcomed by the Pentagon.
But were the province to be controlled by Isil, it would give their forces a springboard from which to mount an all-out assault on Baghdad, where a team of around 1,500 US troops is already acting as mentors to the beleaguered Iraqi army.

Let private contractors take care of it.
Mission creep, or what everyone knew was going to be needed.
Since we squandered thousands of troops to build tents in Liberia, why don’t we just send in the M.A.S.H. unit with M-16’s to do the job?
Well this should make Obama squirm some more.
To paraphrase Ben Franklin, a country if you can keep it. And if you can’t then F you.
Yh...btw, private contractors the IRAQI’s will be paying, not us.
Instead let's send troops to D.C. & wipe out that whole cesspool.
We are late in this game and Baghdad is nearly surrounded. We might be lucky just to get our people out in one piece. This is a disaster of Obama’s making.
He was so pissed at Maliki that he didn’t care what happened in Iraq. He was too arrogant to re-assess the situation.
There are also a lot of conservatives who are going to regret that they thought we should not re-engage in Iraq or fight in Syria.
They don’t have the phone numbers to GolfCart One and AirFundRaiser One ??
Just a simple oversight I’m sure.
Bet you wish you had that Status of Forces Agreement now!
Obama feigns with the best of them .. Grand Poseur true, but No Bonaparte he..
The mask is off, the grin revealed..
Yup, agree 100%
How would you compare the loss of Iraq to the loss of Vietnam with the exception that we lost nearly 60,000 Americans in that war?
The 60,000 Americans aside I would consider losing Iraq to be a bigger defeat because we lost a country we had won before Obama pulled out.
If Iraq wants freedom, let them put their troops up.
Obama can't put boots on the ground because he would be giving in to his advisors........and he might kill some muzzies which wouldn't be brotherly.
I suspect that the actual words used by Mr. Franklin were closer to what you posted than the words later quoted.
