LPEA customers oppose upcharge for visiting homes.. La Plata Electric Association
...
A frequent comment was the impression that the switch from analog to Advanced Metering Infrastructure or so-called smart meters that started in late 2013 was done without informing customers.
Several people said they learned about smart meters from neighbors or only because they were at home when an LPEA technician arrived to switch out the analog meter.
The alleged secrecy eroded public trust, they said.
About 300 LPEA customers have chosen not to have the latest meter-reading technology installed.
A number of speakers cited health problems, which they said started as soon a smart meter was installed.
One speaker pledged to bring a class-action lawsuit; another invoked United Nations Agenda 21, often cited as a threat to local rule or a plan to impose strict gun control; several said LPEA is in the pocket of General Electric, which manufactures smart meters; a number said imposing a fee on recalcitrant customers is extortion.

Sixty-two people attended a similar listening session Wednesday in Pagosa Springs, which reportedly was more confrontational.

What is your opinion?
I haven’t looked at them a whole lot but I do know I wouldn’t want one attached directly to the side of my house.
I know of a couple of firemen who say they’re seeing an extraordinarily high number of house fires starting at the meter. They aren’t saying its because of the meters but they are quietly suggesting putting up a pole and getting the meters off the side of houses.
Interesting.
I suspect the tort lawyer adverts will soon start trolling for customers on this issue.
If you have a ping list for michigan could you please send this around?
Thank you! Michigander’s please post any info or opinions. As I said earlier I am more concerned that they will be able to use this to turn your meter off remotely. Plus radiation concerns.
I believe you pay $10 more per month, but you can opt out in Michigan.
I have a question for you on them if you don’t mind my ignorance on this, but can they be blocked like a cell phone jammer does?
I know you can buy a small cell phone jammer for personal use in your home, what would happen if it was altered to interfere with the frequency of the meter? Granted I understand this would probably be bending a few laws but if you did that could you spoof a meter into ignoring a power down command?
Meaning if the son of a single senior mother in a hot state wanted to keep her air conditioner on during a hot day when you know they will be turning them down could you do it without getting caught easily?
Hypothetically of course...
A central AC system actually uses less elec if you don’t turn it off and on.
It takes quite a while to cool your house down, but one it is it takes little to keep it cool.
It isn’t just the air in your home that has to be cooled, it’s everything in your home like furniture etc.
When you shut off the AC ( Like a smart meter would) while you are away at work, everything in your home heats up and your AC will run twice as much to cool it back down.
That hot furniture etc will set there radiating heat into the home for hours while your AC tries to cool your home back down.
Smart Meters can read your thoughts and send them to Obama.
There's an easier way to keep the A/C from shutting down on a peak-shaving meter or load cutout device: GO PUSH THE BUTTON! They are required by law to allow you to keep your load on, whatever that load is (water heater, A/C, pool pump, etc.) You don't the "peak shaving" $ saving that day, but so what?
This isn't the tyrannical removal of the control over your lives that people think it is. You have the choice. I did not sign up for peak shaving, because I did not think it would save me money. So, my A/C can be on all the time.
You are joking, I know, but I have read comments online of people thinking serious thoughts along those lines.
As a DESIGNER of these things, I know: the poor little things barely have the processing and communication capability to get done their primary mission, which is reporting consumption so the utility can plan for surges, and can do billing.
There ain't no bytes, cycles, or transmissions left to spy on you!
