MEDINA, Ohio (AP) A police dog in northeast Ohio died from heatstroke after being left in a police cruiser for more than four hours last month, officials said.
The Montville Township police department K-9, Beny, died on Sept. 28 after Sgt. Brett Harrison left the dog in a cruiser in the station parking lot from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a statement from police Tuesday. The cruiser was off and the windows were closed.

But if that were you or me......
For sure. Think they would let a citizen off with a two week suspension and apology?
The officer responsible should lose his job and be forced to pay back every dollar the taxpayers paid to train the dog over the years.
Local TAXPAYERS who PAID for the TRAINING of this dog need to be taking to the streets!
Of course, it’s sad that the dog died, but people REALLY need to hold their local Government ACCOUNTABLE.
ONE second! ONE! :)
The K9 units usually leave the engines running and the AC on. Was there a mechanical or personnel breakdown?
Pinging the Ohio list..
I love dogs, but this is akin to purchasing a $100K piece of equipment and then just leaving it out in a parking lot overnight and having it stolen.
Me, too. Exactly.
I would have loved to have been there to break the window and rescue the dog.
If that were you or me, it would be killing a cop. Automatic life sentence.
What about felony animal cruelty charges?
Prayers for Beny, what a miserable way to die.
Isn’t an attack on a k9 considered assaulting a police officer? I expect appropriate charges.. oh wait no I don’t.
guess the doughnut munchers don't have a a problem killing their own wither... and the POS will walk
and here it is getting it's dog killer merit badge... or is that cop killer???
I read somewhere that animal cruelty is a felony in all 50 states now.
Can’t wait to see the reason why the dogs handler will not be charged.
If you or I killed a police dog, we would be beaten if not shot and then sent to prison.
When I policeman kills a police dog, he loses vacation time.
No, he should be charged with manslaughter. They do, after all, treat the damn dog as a person when a citizen kills one.
