Sierra Leone on Tuesday launched an ambitious schooling effort for more than a million children denied their education due to the Ebola epidemic, saying lessons would be delivered via radio.
Classes in a variety of subjects will be broadcast for four hours, six days a week, on 41 radio stations and the country's sole TV channel, the government announced.
"The plan is to provide a suitable option for our school-going population as the entire school system has been disrupted since the outbreak of the Ebola disease," said Education Minister Minkailu Bah.
Schools have been closed since the government announced a state of emergency in July in response to an epidemic which has killed 3,500 people in west Africa, more than 600 of them in Sierra Leone.

I’m guessing the Internet is not prevalent there?
Betcha their school by radio will still be better than our common core by a couple of quantum levels.
Probably not much internet there - what’s interesting in this story is how people adapt. Just let your mind wonder about how things would change in America if this really gets loose ...
Good for them!
Why the h*ll not? You’ve got to respect that kind of dedication.
Homeschool ping
Homeschool and another reason to homeschool ping.
Women would have to quit their jobs if it happened here... leaving kids in day care would be the same as asking for ebola... We can forget sporting events and court courts... You would think our business community would ask Obama to stop flights out of African hot zones for a few months until we know how bad this virus really is.
It’s obvious this strain’s much worse than anything Africa has had to deal with these past years... They never had to leave their dead in the streets before.
Sierra Leonies MUCH brighter than the Prez of the USA —instructive.
We homeschool our kids, but they are in sports and other activities. Wrestling season is coming up, our two oldest wrestle and my husband is the head coach. This is the sport that makes me a bit concerned-lots of close contact, and not just about ebola. How does the enterovirus 68 spread? We have little kids at home and would hate for the big kids or dad to bring it into our family.

A good idea from the government?
Sierra Leone sounds like it has its act together (on some things... ) any one know what this country is like? I have heard some surprising common sense from them lately
(surprising that it is from a government, not surprising because it is that specific country)
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
