If you think the Obama administration has been characterized by a big expansion of government employment, you're wrong.
Bill McBride at Calculated Risk has updated his charts of public sector payrolls under President Barack Obama and his recent predecessors.
As you can see, it's not even close.
Obama in the dark blue line has seen a sustained and violent slump in public sector employment since he became president, and we're not even close to closing the gap.
Reagan had a brief decline in public sector employment, but it came back fast. All the other presidents saw only gains on this measure.

Gee - 500 jobs over 6 years...this is a lot from a bloated FedGov? The chart is nearly meaningless with all the axises labeled - 500 jobs lost a year? Overall?
Also, those ‘cuts’ are microscopic compared to the slashing of the number of military forces. I know I feel so secure that the Army will soon be a pre-WWII levels. /S
The y-axis is in thousands so it suggests that Zero is 500,000 down, about 10,000 per state. I think the real problem is that it’s all public sector payrolls. FedGov has increased radically, but state and local gov likely have lost the ability to coopt tax dollars and funnel them to cronies.
Everyone who is forced to survive on public assistance has a federal “job” or “paycheck””. There are 90+ million people out of the work force.

A very important factor for comparison is the growth in public sector compensation, which may very well offset a reduction of the number of employees, especially at the federal level. If you peel away the state and local numbers, you will find enormous growth in the cost of the federal government under 0
