May I suggest you get a book on arithmetic. We are dealing with negative numbers so it might have to be 7th grade or beyond. It is integers so no need for fractions or that pesky long division.

Imagine, if you will, that each candidate has a counter that is associated with them and that a vote for one increments that counter; given that model, how does voting for candidate C, over B, equate to an increase in the votes for A?
Yes, I realize there is an electoral college and that it is a level of indirection — but I cannot be held to account for their actions, as I am not them and they have their own free will.
