New York Times cutting 100 jobs, NYT Opinion app

The New York Times Co. is launching another round of buyouts and layoffs, telling staff on Wednesday that it must cut 100 newsroom jobs to further reduce costs and focus resources on its digital operations. It’s also axing its NYT Opinion app after four months and relegating the NYT Now app to a smartphone-only product aimed at new and younger readers, after the lower-priced subscription products failed to take off as hoped.

The planned cuts represent about 7.5 percent of a total current newsroom staff of 1,330. Buyouts will be offered to an undisclosed number of senior managers in the print, digital and advertising divisions, New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and CEO Mark Thompson said in a morning memo to employees. …

This is SO surprising!

Who would have thought that the NYT had as many as 100 “newsmen”?

I thought that all of the NYT’s “writers” wrote fiction...

Obama says the economy is actually doing quite well, but folks aren’t “feeling it”.

Well, now 100 more folks know what it feels like.

I wonder how many of these cuts are real/permanent and how many are temporary ... Making the year end numbers look good by laying off people who will be rehired next year?

I’ve seen that happen at a couple publically traded companies I worked for. People would be laid off in September, given 4-6 month severance packages, then rehired in January or February.

No, their job was to scrub past stories to match what Democrats say today.

The same outfit that advocates very high minimum wages is about to
cut the wages of 100 employees to $0.

That’s the way a lot of companies are hiring graphics people —my profession. “You’ll work for six months, then when another job opens, you’ll be given priority over new applicants.” I was fortunate enough to find a good full-time job, after looking for 14 months.

Right, I am sure the NYT has a teletype hooked directly to the White House.
