Flights are slowly resuming at O’Hare Airport after a fire at an FAA air traffic control center in Aurora forced a complete halt to flights in and out of O’Hare and Midway Airports.

Hundreds of flights are cancelled at O’Hare, and that’s put thousands of travelers in long lines to re-book their trips. Some people stuck in Terminal 3 waited in line for at least one hour to reschedule their flights.

Some travelers didn’t receive any notification about the cancellations and delays, and were shocked when they arrived at O’Hare and saw the long lines. Some people got alerts too late. A lot of people are disappointed because they may miss important family events and cruises.

I drive right past there every day on my way home from work. It's been a heavily guarded facility ever since 9/11.

A friend of mine posted this. “ATF source says a disgruntled contractor was upset because he was being transferred to Hawaii. He went down to the transmission lines in the basement, wrapped them in rags and soaked the rags in gasoline.”

Yeah, how horrible. Sand, ocean, beaches, bikinis. What a horrible life.

Yahoo news:

The fire was set by a contract employee angry about being transferred to Hawaii who tried to sabotage the center that is crucial for air traffic, local broadcaster WGN reported law enforcement officials as saying.

The employee cut himself while cutting wires and also doused lines with gasoline and set them on fire, WGN reported.

Law enforcement officials are planning a briefing later on Friday and were not immediately available to comment.

Not justifying whatsoever what he did but have you ever worked long hours in such an environment?

Kind of like being in prison with your cell looking over a resort

I actually interviewed for a job with the Virgin Island's WAPA (Water And Power Authority) for a .NET developer's job.

The guy I was interviewing said he had one local candidate and three statesiders, of which I was one.

He said I was the most technically-skilled, but he was hesitant to hire me, because "I would get island-sick".

I assured him I would not, and he laughed. "I've seen it a hundred times. You think you are moving to paradise, but if you are not used to island life, it becomes a prison. Quickly. You would need to budget at least 3 week-long returns to the States a year, or you WILL lose it."

He ended up going with the local candidate. LOL

Just took a look at ORD departures.

Looks like both UA/AA are canceling most of the 50-seat regionals enmass to make room for the mainline aircraft.

I worked there as a contractor before 9-11.

First day my contact ask if we could meet in the smokers pavilion, so he could have a puff.
The huge monster ash tray was overflowing with butts! He said they clean it every two hours,

The controllers work one hour on, one half hour off; to rest the eyes. The last hour go home paid,
Some run FULL TIME businesses on the phone while at work.

A controller told me that he did the same job in the Navy. He said it does strain the eyes but the Navy had a different schedule. On duty at times it went ‘hot’; you did not think of getting up, for hours.

The overnight cleaning crew used something that had an odor .
They shut it down for hours to air it out and make it safe!

The computer still used wired core memory and a punch card reader! A new system was on the way so they gave early retirement to the guys that kept the dinosaur alive.
The new system was delayed so the had had to hire the old guys back $$$ plus the pension to feed the beast.

Many good and talented people work there but also some stand out prima donnas and slugs.

Sounds like an IBM 1620.

I do not recall what the beast was?
I do recall the claim that the FAA and the New Jersey tollway had the last of them existent.

I visited Oahu some years ago. My hosts picked me up at the airport and drove completely around the island. Including stops to take pictures, it took 90 minutes. If you’re not really into the island lifestyle, you *will* go island happy after a while.

Yes, I have heard of Island sickness and did go back every few weeks. I think it’s more missing people back home than the Island itself though. I think most people would be fine for a long time with friends/family on the island.

I was referring more to the difficulty of working long hours when in such a beautiful place with 90% of people around you in resort mode. I’d rather work 14 hour days here than in Hawaii
