Fresh off the heels of apologizing for using the offensive term Shylocks, Joe Biden referred to Asia as the Orient while detailing his recent trip to the continent and attempting to show off his foreign-policy cred.
On the way back from Mumbai to meet with President Xi in China, I stopped in Singapore to meet with a guy named Lee Kuan Yew, the vice president said in Iowa on Wednesday, who most foreign-policy experts around the world say is the wisest man in the Orient.
Most dictionaries define Orient as an archaic term used to refer to Asia. The word has largely taken on a pejorative meaning in recent years, with one scholar calling its use part of racializing Asians as forever opposite others.
There’s no reason the Orient should be an offensive term.
It simply means the east and refers to East Asia.
But in the insane climate, it’s somehow made to be an offensive term.
But there are double standards for Dems.
I though the same thing.
I agree. Biden is an incurable jerk. But what on earth is wrong with calling it “the Orient”?
Rules for Radicals: Make the other side live up to their own rules.
The Orient is the Orient. It is what it is.
The PC police can KMA.
I am with Biden on this one
??
This 'guy' has done more for the world than any Democrat since Harry Truman.
Drinking again no doubt.
As much as I can’t stand “Slow Joe”, I am with him, on this one. None of the native born Asians, nor the older Americans of Asian heritage, that I know, have a problem with “Orient”, or “Oriental”. Some of the younger ones, of course, gripe about it, they have adopted a “victicrat” mentality (thank you, Larry Elder). This kind of stuff makes me ill....
I agree with Biden. He deserves to be correct at least twice in one day.
Places and things are Oriental. People are Asian.
"Furriner".
“Theres no reason the Orient should be an offensive term.
It simply means the east and refers to East Asia.”
I completely agree. However, it’s also been a misnomer since 1492 (as has the term “the Occident”). If you live on the west coast of N. America, you get to the “Orient”, by traveling west. In fact, the shortest distance by air, between Washington D.C. and Japan, or most of China requires heading west. Perhaps Biden meant to say “the Occident”.
Oh, and why isn’t “Occidental” considered offensive?
>>Theres no reason the Orient should be an offensive term.

I never understood that either. Why “Asian” is preferable is lost to antiquity...
Even my Oriental friends don’t understand it.
Joe Biden under fire from Jewish groups for using word 'Shylock' during speech about money lending
I’ll side with Biden on this one, there’s nothing wrong with the term “Orient” or “Oriental”.
P!ss on political correctness.
