The Obama administration is preparing to introduce major steps to phase out production of a popular chemical coolant used in refrigerators and air conditioners, citing growing evidence that the substance is contributing to the warming of the planet.
The White House will announce on Tuesday a series of voluntary commitments by some of the countrys largest chemical firms and retailers to move rapidly away from R-134a and similar compounds used in nearly every office, home and automobile in the country, according to current and former U.S. officials familiar with the effort.

It’s for certain nothing else equals R-12 so far. I recall having to turn my auto air conditioner off and back on even in 98 degree weather because I could not run it fulltime even at the lowest setting without shivering. Now in really hot weather it runs wide open all the time to try to keep the car cool. The air coming out of an air conditioner could be brought down nearly to the freezing point, now you are lucky to get it down to the low forties. I wish we could go back to R-12.
Like this?
No! Puron (R-410) is not the same as R-134a.
So can this new Obama coolant be used in old systems? I doubt it but anyone know?
What if your old AC has a leak and you need refrigerant?
DuPont is the largest non-governmental employer in Delaware. Vice-President Biden is from Delaware.
Ammonia was also used in household and camper refrigerators. There was one in the hotel’s housekeeping storeroom for the staff to keep their lunches in. My uncle bought a camper with one in it. It didn’t work, so I told him what I learned in tech school—wrap it up in a blanket and roll it around the yard, if it sat the refrigerant would separate or some such, and doing so would remix it. He strapped it down in a 2-wheel trailer and drove it through the farm field behind a tractor. Guess what—it worked! Go figure...
About the time all the CFC hubbub was happening I was focused on pneumatic and DDC control systems. I don't miss the refrigeration stuff.
not sure if they even know what the new “standard” will be yet, or if the “new” will be compatible to mix with the current freon and if it’s like previous changes like from R12 to R134 you will have to do a “retro” and switch it over to new stuff which obviously will cost more than just adding some that is compatible

It was easy money, other than having to hump the gear around, and when you fix the kitchen equipment, they feed ya good. The company I worked for bought a pallet of 30# R12 jugs when the switchover was about to go down, they had a lot of stores to service.

Puron may be a brand name, I’m not sure. But when I googled it it has a number of R-0420 something. Not the numbers you folks are talking about. My technician told me this summer that it now sells for $275/lb for replacement. Glad I didn’t need any.
