“In Iran we don’t have homosexuals like in your country,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said at Columbia University last night in response to a question about the recent execution of two gay men there.
“In Iran we do not have this phenomenon,” he continued. “I do not know who has told you we have it.”
Fareed Zakaria claimed that Newsweek reporter Maziar Bahari was sentenced to prison in part for posting this photo on his Facebook page.
And now they’ve been discovered in Iran. (via Religion of Peace)
An 82-page document recently issued by Irans parliamentary research department is stark in its findings. Not only are young adults sexually active, with 80% of unmarried females having boyfriends, but secondary-school pupils are, too. Illicit unions are not just between girls and boys; 17% of the 142,000 students who were surveyed said that they were homosexual.
At 17% Iran would be far gayer than America. Or most places.
While the Middle East does have a higher prevalence of homosexual behavior (which is really not the same as our construct of gay as a permanent genetic identity, itself an unscientific notion) it’s doubtful that these numbers are accurate.

Haha
The way pedophilia is practiced in the world of Islam, and accommodated by Islam, there must be millions of men with repressed homosexual tendencies. The buggering of adolescent males has consequences.

Well there you go! A homeland for homos.
I would vote for a one-way ticket to Iran for any homo anywhere.
Would solve a host of problems.
From an intellectual standpoint, the article is likely right these numbers seem at face value, way off base.
The concept of ‘sexuality’ is really an Americanism, not regarded as being real is most of the world, and correctly so. Men who exclusively have sex with men as we see in the United States most often recognized as ‘gay’ would make up a similar 1-2% of people around the world.
What the Middle East does have in spades is Roman and Greek style pederasty, where men will have sex with teenage boys on a scale unprecedented in the Western World outside of perhaps Hollywood, Massachusetts and the BBC. There are vast underground rings of kidnapped and impoverished male teens who are put up for auction for sex with largely power elites.
Iran of course, doesn’t hang these men, because many are in the government and the judiciary. Its sad but true. It is also very prevalent in Pakistan. Interestingly though, I have heard it is dramatically less common in Jordan and Syria.
I remember that speech. It prompted a lot of posts at that time in blogosphere. Seriously, looking at AN’s eyes in photos you posted he definitely looks like he or his family have a gene from the mongols. His other features also don’t look like many typical persians, more arab.
It is possible to have people who simultaneously engage in relationships with both genders. It was common in the Renaissance, Middle East, and in Greco-Roman culture, among others. In fact, if one is bisexual, one can get away with it in the Middle East.
If you lift up one - you’ll find another...
“the Middle East does have in spades is Roman and Greek style pederasty,” — yes that’s very true. Alexander was said to be bisexual, himself.
The Big Old Mo was a mass-murdering pedophile.

Socially segregated from women, Arab men succumb to homosexual behavior. But, interestingly enough, there is no word for “homosexual” in their culture in the modern Western sense. That is because having sex with boys, or with effeminate men, is seen as a social norm. Males serve as available substitutes for unavailable women.
