As the referendum on Scottish independence approaches, the Yes campaign is receiving an unexpected boost from Russian nationalists.
Supporters of the Kremlins annexation of Crimea have latched on to Alex Salmonds bid to leave Britain as a parallel to the struggle of ethnic Russians in Ukraine to break with a supposedly bullying overlord in Kiev.
With resentment running high against Britain as a crusader for tough sanctions against Moscow over its patronage of the separatist rebels in Ukraine, blogs in Russia have become flooded with calls for Scottish freedom.
The campaign often tongue-in-cheek but chiming with official rhetoric on Western hypocrisy sees direct parallels with the separatists fight for autonomy in the Russophone Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
Wags have even adopted the names of the pro-Russian separatist regions the Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples Republics, or Novorossiya to produce portmanteaux such as the Scottish Peoples Republic, Scotorossiya and Keltorossiya that demonstrate solidarity with independence campaigners in far-off Edinburgh.
Another perceived point of harmony is St Andrews flag the white on blue version is Scotlands saltire, while a blue on white version has served as a naval ensign in Russia since the times of Peter the Great.
Some of the warmth for Mr Salmonds campaign may reflect his own respect for Mr Putin. The Scottish politician said in March that he admired certain aspects of the Russian presidents rule, adding, "He's restored a substantial part of Russian pride and that must be a good thing.

Interesting. I just noticed that on another thread.
Ping.
The Kremlin would love to see Scottish independence because the nationalists have promised to remove British submarines carrying nuclear Trident missiles from Scottish territory.
It’s even more simple that that: the Kremlin prefers any outcome that makes Europe weaker. And its strategy dovetails nicely with the 4P crowd (paleo/putinista/paultard/peacenik).
Maybe Mad Vlad thinks he can get another Kalinigrad or Transnistria or South Ossetia thing going
So much for Celtic and Rangers joining the English Premier League.
That’s mighty retarded of them, listening too much to the equally socialist English media harping doom and gloom. Scottish politicians—even lefties—have already stated that they will join NATO. Scotland and England won’t really come unglued either way. They might only learn a few things about hard work and even dealing.
He’s come out and said that it is a ‘non negotiable’ issue and a central plank for his campaign for independence. It would be political suicide for them to go back on that issue if there was a ‘yes’ vote.
It would be very problematic for his case to join NATO, and explicitly nuclear alliance whose nuclear umbrella he wishes to shelter under without getting his hands dirty on those icky wicky nukes.
