Next weeks referendum on Scottish independence has largely flown under the radar screen here in the United States. The cable news networks have devoted little attention so far to the issue, as the Isil threat in the Middle East continues to dominate international coverage. There has been no polling conducted on the Scottish question in the US, and it is doubtful that many Americans outside of the Washington policy bubble or the financial milieu of New York are particularly exercised by the outcome of a vote taking place over 3,000 miles away.
They should be concerned, however. What happens in Scotland will reverberate on this side of the Atlantic, and not for the better. Here are five reasons why Americans should be nervous about the outcome of next weeks vote if Scotland votes for independence.
1. The Special Relationship will be undercut.
The United Kingdom is far and away Americas biggest and most important ally. Anything that weakens Britain, and chips away at the Special Relationship, is a big negative for the United States. This fear has been amply expressed by dozens of members of the United States Congress, both Republican and Democrat, who are backing a resolution in the House of Representatives declaring that a united, secure, and prosperous United Kingdom is vital to US interests.
The Special Relationship is too powerful a partnership to be set adrift by a Scottish vote for independence...

” I believe the Scottish are socialists.”
The ones that aren’t heroin addicts.
Wilson!!! That was his name! Thanks...
Yep, it was total, partisan hokum but the damn press convinced many it was true and Bushie didn’t defend too much...sad.
Another thing....
These days I’d trust Brit intell more than our own CIA being run by a certified Moooooslim!
One more though...
Did you ever catch Hitch and his completely opposite politically brother, Peter, have debates on CSPAN way back when?
Damned impressive and entertaining. Use of the English language at it’s finest!
Scottish independence would be like California becoming independent - a blessing to those who remain behind!
I enjoyed your post #78 also. There is a lot of smug ignorance over here. A few of us appreciate how dangerously close the UK and all of western civilization came to perishing from the summer of 1940 to 1941.
It was only the determination of Churchill and the will of the UK residents which held out.
Yes I saw that. While Peter was/is definitely right of center Christopher was more of a Libetarian before he died. He certainly understood the dangers of radical Islam in ways that the left wing did/does not.
You can tell the Scots are brighter than the English, they have a lot of devolved power over which the English M.P.'s have no control, yet Scottish M.P.'s get to vote on the same English questions.
If the English had their wits about them they would demand either that they have their own assembly/paliament of that Scottish M.P.'s at Westminster are barred from voting on questions that involve England only.
