Amnesty is a complicated issue. I like how Singapore handles immigratns. Border Security is a straight forward issue.
If my fading memory is correct, Romney said he would secure the border, build a fence and control people overstaying their temporary visa.
I was on a vacation to SE Asia earlier this year. I visited Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. Observing Singapore blew my mind away. Singapore has the most concentration of millionaires in the world! More than USA, Switzerland, Oil rich middle-east countries! Every 6th Singapore citizen is a millionaire. People from all over Asia are desperate to immigrate to Singapore. Yet there are NO illegals in Singapore! There are NO food stamps in Singapore. There is no unemployment compensation program in Singapore! Actually there is no welfare for able bodied people of working age!
Singapore spends all the money saved on welfare on infrastructure. Their airport makes any American airport feel like a 3rd world airport. The underground highway from the world class cruise terminal to airport is ultra modern. Many miles long, it is brightly lighted and beautiful. Public transportation and roads are world class. You do not even see any graffiti or liter anywhere in Singapore!
Which may be the reason Singapore got so rich! There are 40% more jobs in Singapore than there are working age citizens! Singapore gives out 2 year work permits to foreign workers. At the end of 2 years the worker must return to home country and re-apply. No one dares to break the rules because the work-permits are so valuable to the workers. If you break the rules, you are immediately arrested & deported, never allowed to return.
