In Mary Landrieu residency matter, Rob Maness in the national spotlight is the real winner

Republican Senate candidate Rob Maness might not have a legal claim against Sen. Mary Landrieu's residency, but he perhaps managed something better for his long-shot campaign -- a week in the national media spotlight.

Heading into the election's home stretch, Landrieu's campaign has been forced to spend the bulk of its time fending off attacks from Republicans about her residency and controversial flights. Political experts say every minute spent on these issues is time Landrieu isn't spending on touting her record.

"These are common tactics not only in Louisiana but across the country," said LSU political scientist Robert Hogan. "Incumbents like to talk about all the wonderful things they've done. When she's getting in the weeds about travel forms, she's not talking about leadership."

Hogan said it's in Republicans' best interests to keep the Landrieu controversies forefront in a race that has an absence of big issues.

"Campaigns are often about sewing seeds of doubt in the minds of voters," Hogan said.

Maness had a week to challenge Landrieu's residency, but his campaign waited until late in the afternoon on the last day to challenge a candidate's qualifications to ask for an investigation.

So maybe she will need to buy that home in NOLA after all — Or, just become an yet another overpaid K street lobbyist and then she will never have to return to NOLA.

Hard to imagine she didn’t see this happening. All you had to do was buy a studio condo in New Orleans....probably in the $70,000 range, and your issues are cleaned up. You could rent it out ten months out of the year and even make some cash from the deal.

Personally, the minute you buy property in Maryland, DC, or Virginia.....I see you as a resident of that state. I’d also question her if she has Louisiana tags on her car, or if she has a Louisiana license.

She owns a big home in Slidell, but it probably is legally owned by her corporation and can’t be considered a homestead. Most likely used for parties and fundraising, I think.

She is chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and she cannot move the approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline one iota. Also, she has had zero influence on the Obama administration’s determination to shut down all coal-fired power plants. These are major issues to Louisiana. Many of us in Louisiana get our power from coal. The pipline would provide Canadian crude oil to Louisiana refineries. These are major issues.

Sen. Mary Landrieu’s Newest Fight Is Over Her Louisiana Residency

snip

A Landrieu campaign official also noted that both Landrieu and her husband file taxes
in Louisiana. Her campaign did not elaborate. ......

Landrieu maintains that she lives at her parents’ home in New Orleans, of which she
is a partial owner under a family trust and where she is registered to vote.......

Landrieu claims her parents’ home in New Orleans as her principle address, and
listed it on her statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Election Commission
earlier this year. But the Democrat also lists her multi-million dollar Washington, DC
home as her address on other documents, including her filing with the Louisiana
Secretary of State’s office when she qualified to be on the ballot last week. .......

end snips

Wherever Landrieu’s kids spend their time, that’s where Mary Landrieu’s residence is.

If they have Facebook pages, you can bet their friends will be Washington DC metro area kids and NOT LOUISIANA KIDS. And you can bet that they WILL NOT HAVE NEW ORLEANS’ ACCENTS.

I’m not a member of Facebook, so I can’t check this out.
