Wait just a minute. Wasn’t it Al Gore that brought up Willie Horton? Doesn’t he get any credit for such a racist attack during the primary? He is a Dem, after all.
And on top of that, I didn’t see anything wrong with a “Willie Horton” ad. Dukakis created a system that paroled violent criminals and it resulted in tragedy. That was a legitimate campaign issue. If a politician actually takes an action, whether directly or by creating or overseeing a system, that lets criminals loose to commit more crime, it should be raised.
As an aside, I absolutely hate when conservatives buy into Dem talking points. Some conservatives talk about “Swift Boating” as if what they did was bad, wrong or false. Now we have articles suggesting that the Willie Horton ads that Bush created were wrong. Quite frankly, as much of a liberal as Bush I was, his 1988 campaign was a model of tough hitting that absolutely wiped the floor with the Dems. We haven’t had such a good campaign since then.

Yep, it was our multi millionaire former VP, who made his money on oil, chemicals and flim-flam, who made the original Willie Horton ad.
Just like Hillary’ campaign first brought up Obama’s lack of a birth certificate.
Democrats come up with most attack ads.
As several people mentioned (but with more detail), it was Al Gore who brought it up - in a 1988 presidential debate with Dukakis.
