A couple of weekends ago I was at the range testing out my new Surefire 762 suppressor. I ended up doing more chatting than shooting as I answered a great deal of questions about obtaining NFA items (Silencers, Machine Guns, Destructive Devices, Short Barreled Rifles, Short Barreled Shotguns, Any Other Weapons(AOW), etc)

CodeToad,
Well, long story here.... My city police chief refused to sign my paperwork (his lackeys said they only do concealed carry and not suppressors/SBR) and sent me to our Campus police chief instead.
I went in for the fingerprints and FAILED to get a signature on the back page...... I screwed up.... I just received it from my dealer two weeks ago and got it done. I am told 2 more months......
Yes it is. 'Specially in a Noveske! 220gr SMK's, 11.2gr AA1680, 1025fps.
The target makes more noise on impact.
Enough to warrant a slight pudgy. d;^)
CopperTop,
I am lusting for this baby... a ST Compressor SBR - 300BLK (NFA) from Spikes Tactical.

Lots of green to tie up into one of these.

Six months?
Last I’d heard it was around a year wait.
My $200 ATF check was cashed for my SilencerCo Osprey May 27th.
I wonder if the NSA has opened a file on you because of that chat?
LOL! Nah, just added to the existing one.
Lol! Govr workerss lose pensions? I bet lois lerner will have a much bdtter one than I get.
I’ll be getting another one for the Ruger 22/45 that we just picked up 2 weeks ago. Thankfully, the shop where I picked up the Ruger also does class 3 goodies, and I already have one picked out. It’ll be a heck of a lot cheaper than the Osprey ($900+).
OK. That’s betterer. About 2-3 months is the current backlog.
Yup.

Believe it or not my dealer just called me and said I have been approved :)
Sweet! Congrats!
Yep, the ATF deliberately sits on the applications for long periods of time to dissuade more people from applying.Bull-Butter. They are inundated with oceans of applications for all types of NFA weapons due to the 0bama gun & ammo panic. You can blame the govt for having so few examiners, but the few they have are processing as fast as they can. The app examiners are actually on our side. I can only speak for my experience in my region, but I've had them call me to clarify info when they could have taken the lazy way out and kicked it back to make me start over. They didn't. They've been fair and decent to me and I'll give credit where it's due.
The rest of the batfe may be a horror story, but the nfa examiners have done right by me and I will put in a good word for them if no one else will.
Thank you! The wait was almost as long as an elephant’s term of pregnancy!
Then the ATF deliberately under staffs the applications office so that people will be dissuaded by long wait times.
Then the ATF deliberately under staffs the applications office so that people will be dissuaded by long wait times. That is likey correct -- Last I checked, each multi-state region is served by a single examiner or two, likely intentionally restricted by budget and/or executive direction.
Regardless, the examiners (in my experience) are paddling just as hard as they can. I would not blame them for the mess; in fact I would give them credit for trying to keep their heads above water in a very tough situation. Imagine always having a "To-Do" stack that, ever since 0bama was elected, only gets bigger and bigger despite how much effort you put into whittling it down.
It seems to me that it would be easy for them to get discouraged and just do the bare minimum required. But like I said, I've had them take the time to call me for clarification when they could just as easily have kicked the application out and made me start over. I'll take them over the "could not care less" crowd at the DMV any day.
From what I remember after hearing from different sources, there are twelve people in a big room that’s loaded wall-to-wall with boxed filled with applications -and two more people were hired on in the last 2 years. They’re busting their humps to be sure.
What I’m wondering is this:
The ATF and feds have classified a suppressor as a firearm, right?
Wouldn’t this long wait be considered an infringement as was the California waiting period, which was decided as unconstitutional by a federal judge last week?
Just throwing that thought out there.
Ya only get one go 'round on this rock. Make the most of it as ya see fit. I tried playing with a stack of money one time. Wasn't nearly as much fun. You'll make more!
Nice Spike's package. Do you follow them on Arfcom?
I had the .308 can prior to the 'Veske. So BLK comin out was a real piece'o'luck. d:^)
What Im wondering is this: The ATF and feds have classified a suppressor as a firearm, right? Wouldnt this long wait be considered an infringement as was the California waiting period, which was decided as unconstitutional by a federal judge last week?It sure does in *my* opinion! But opinions vary, and mine doesn't count for much.
I'd like to see suppressors, SBR's & SBS's removed as NFA items. Given the firepower available in modern pistols *AND* the fact that you can get more than just a few rifles in a relatively compact "pistol" form factor (questionably concealable, but nonetheless) *AND* all dealer transactions require NICS checks -- What's the point of continued restrictions? It has become a mere paper drill with a $200 tax.
And by "paper-drill", I would wager that %100 of the applicants have no reason to believe they will be turned down when they submit. If there is a rejection, it's due to something the applicant was not aware of when they submitted and/or some defect in the application that the examiners can't remedy by themselves (fingerprints unreadable, the check bounces, or some such). I doubt very seriously there are criminals knowingly going through the process and/or sending off $200 they know they will lose and can't get back. So yeah, paper-drill for the most part and we all have to go through the motions simply because the bureaucracy must be fed.
But back to the subject - I have every reason to believe the examiners are truly on our side based on my experiences. They aren't to blame for the problems and are doing their job better than most federal employees I've interacted with.
