UN Chief 'Alarmed' by Israel's State Land Designation

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned Israel’s decision to declare 4,000 dunams (988 acres) of land in Judea as state land, AFP reports.

Ban’s spokesman said that the UN chief is "alarmed" by the Israeli plans and feared they could lead to more “settlement activity”.

"The Secretary General is alarmed by yesterday's announcement by Israeli authorities to declare as so-called 'state land' nearly 1,000 acres of land in the Bethlehem area of the West Bank," the spokesman said, according to AFP.

"The seizure of such a large swath of land risks paving the way for further settlement activity, which -- as the United Nations has reiterated on many occasions -- is illegal under international law and runs totally counter to the pursuit of a two-state solution,” Ban’s spokesman said.

"The Secretary General calls on Israel to heed the calls of the international community to refrain from settlement activity and abide by its commitments under international law and the Quartet Road Map."

Sunday’s decision is one of Israel's responses to the kidnapping and murder of Israeli teens Eyal Yifrah, Naftali Frenkel, and Gilad Sha'ar. The three were kidnapped in Gush Etzion and their bodies were found several weeks later in a field near Hevron.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas issued a condemnation of Israel’s decision, which opens the possibility of further construction in the region.

Speaking Sunday evening, Abbas spokesperson Nabil Abu-Rudeineh said that the decision would “bring about a further deterioration” in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

They don’t seemed alarmed by imminent domain and state and federal land grabs for private development.

No kidding. We have ISIS, Russia invading Ukraine, Iran going nuclear and the Nork moonbats developing bigger missiles. But the biggest problem in the world is what some Jews are doing with 1,000 acres???

Yes, because it’s very alarming to build houses on land that has no conflicting claim of ownership* by any person other than the State of Israel (who was granted it by the private owners due to private sale and then bequest decades ago).

* Undoubtedly claims will be made now, even though it is completely empty.

Israel already gave land for peace and got none. It’s time to take land back everytime there is terror.

Israel’s leaders have come to the conclusion that whatever they do, the will be condemned. Hamas indiscriminately fired thousands of rockets and mortars into Israel. The world did not criticize Hamas but instead roundly condemned Israel for what by historic reference was a very measured response. What country would allow two million of its enemies to live in an adjacent self governing militarized enclave, and allow them to remain as such after being attacked? Israel is also witnessing a bizarre theocratic Iranian dictatorship which funds Hamas, Hezbollah, makes repeated apocalyptic threats seek nuclear weapons. The world does not condemn them, gives them international status by negotiating with them and is about to sign an agreement that essentially leaves their nuclear infrastructure intact and functioning. Israel has come to the conclusion that regardless of world opinion, they will proceed with policies that they deem in their best interests. Israel made a huge strategic mistake when they allowed the establishment of militarized self governing Gaza. Unfortunately a country that has been heretofore dependent on the good will of its patrons for survival may be making another strategic blunder.

Who had possession of those 1000 acres before Israel's announcement? I don't mean which country claims the land. I'm curious as to who had title to that specific land.

Was it owned by the Palestinian Authority? By many different Palestinian families? By many different Israeli families?p>

By the way, do you suppose Crimea is more or less than 1000 acres?

The danger for Israel is that if they make it hard for continued support in the Congress, Obama will be free to truly exact a terrible price.

Think of the ring of fire laid around Israel, encouraged by the administration. Yes, Israel should annex the land, but there will be an attempt by the administration to cut them off in any way they can think of.

“The Secretary General is alarmed by yesterday’s announcement by Israeli authorities to declare as so-called ‘state land’ nearly 1,000 acres of land in the ... West Bank,”...
*****************************************************************************************
I have a MAJOR problem with this action on about 1,000 acres in the West Bank.

It should be closer to 100,000 new acres open to immediate “settlement”. 1,000 acres is clearly inadequate.
