We all know that the federal government has gotten a lot bigger in the past half century. In 2013, Washington spent five times what it spent in 1960, adjusted for inflation. Annual federal spending doubled between 1960 and 1975 and had doubled again by 2000. And dozens of bureaucracies created after 1960, from the Environmental Protection Agency (1970) to the Department of Homeland Security (2002), dot the federal landscape.
And yet, the number of federal civilian workers (excluding postal workers) has barely budged. When George W. Bush became president, the executive branch employed about 1.8 million civilians, about the same as when John F. Kennedy won the White House. There were more federal bureaucrats (about 2.2 million) when Ronald Reagan won reelection in 1984 than when Barack Obama won reelection in 2012 (about 2 million).

Wow, just what we need -— another million federal “workers” sitting around writing regulations, harassing the citizenry, oppressing conservatives, doing studies that find (of course) they are underpaid and overworked, watching porn and counting the days to when they can enjoy their government retirement benefits.
I was just sitting here thinking, ‘Hey, we don’t have enough civilian bureaucrats in the federal government’, then lo-and-behold this article appears. Amazing
lol
I call bullshit on this Washington Post attempt to blind us all to the reality of the Leftist BIG GOVERNMENT sitting on our shoulders today. We know better, because we feel the weight of it all. They can’t change it with their bs.
Nobody can ever tell me all those Leftist puke occupying space in D.C., and across the fruited plain in various, and assorted Federal offices was more under Ronald Reagan then under any since. It’s BS.
The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.
Sure, why not? Send another dollar to DC to get 10 cents back in services. The other 90 cents just keeps bureaucrats in perpetual employment. This has got to stop.
How about the obvious answer, fewer programs?
The delta is merely the “loss” of postal workers since the advent of the internet. Only problem is, we need to “off” at least another 200k or more of the lazy, obnoxious aholes.
Exactly!!!
Cut the fng programs, and the sub-contractors and the federal employees
And continue cutting and cutting and cutting until the outgo of the fng federal government is LESS THAN it’s IN GO !!!
And then let the chips fall where they may.
That day is coming anyway ONLY BY FORCE!!!!
The extra bureaucrats are hiring - not “federal workers” subject to federal hiring restrictions and rules - with all of that five times more federal money (in real world tax dollars) but contractors who WORK FOR the federal bureaucrats to spend money to buy politicians and federal bureaucrat votes (such as teacher unions, city and state unions, federal unions, unions who work for the companies who get federal contracts ...
I believe it. The number of contractors has exploded. And they cost a fortune.
That’s an amazing coincidence. I was thinking how can cut my home budget and I thought why not hire a couple dozen bureaucrats.
Not quite as dramatic a statistic when you remember there were only 180M Americans then. So it comes out to something like 3x the spending per capita, adjusted for inflation.
Still too much, of course.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
