If he hadn't been commissioned, he could have spent some time as Seaman Semen Sementchenko.

Seaman would have added a bit of interest! :D But, I understand “Semen Sementchenko” is his “Noms de guerre” or ‘war name’ adopted for security reasons, i.e. members of the French resistance during World War II, military special forces soldiers, etc. I do not beleive he has revealed his true identity.
