California prosecutors have declined to file charges against a sheriff's deputy who struck and killed a prominent entertainment attorney and former Napster executive with his patrol car last year. Deputy Andrew Wood was apparently distracted by his mobile digital computer when his patrol car drifted into the bike lane, running over cyclist Milton Olin Jr. [snip] Prosecutors said in a letter released Wednesday and cited by Los Angeles Daily News that because Wood was acting within the course of his duties when typing into his computer, criminal charges are not warranted.

Full title: Deputy who killed former Napster COO after drifting into the bike lane while distracted by his laptop will NOT face charges because he was answering a work-related email.

If any citizen had done this they would be in jail. We should be holding the police to a higher standard but in today's society that is not the case.

I see cops driving and talking on their cell phones or looking down at the seat next to them (probably to use their computer) all the time.

Cops need Google cars.

SO if I’m sending an email for work and kill someone, it’s OK because it’s part of my duties?

One set of laws for the lords and their enforcers, another set of laws for the peasants.

Only if you’re a cop.

So, we the people are not safe from cops because they now have a license to be distracted while driving even if it kills one of us??

Time to disband this unsafe organization that threatens our lives.

“Deputy Andrew Wood was apparently distracted by his mobile digital computer”

Saw a cop do something simalar in my town once. She was distracted by her laptop while making a right turn. That corner was occupied by a boat sales retailer.....she drove right into the back of one of the boats. BAM.

Frankly I blame the morons who think taking up lanes of roads and giving them to cyclists was a good idea.

4 or 5 years ago they took 2 of 4 lanes on a local avenue and made 2 bike lanes and a center turn lane. There have been several car cycle accidents where there were none when people simply road on the sidewalk.

BTW nobody has gone to jail

I’m in no position to judge cause I don’t have all the facts, but it seems to me if a civilian had done this he or she would be up on charges.

Hey, it’s California where the lawless are innocent and the lawful are guilty! Look at the Gov. calling for illegals who will be welcomed all the while they are in debt up to the last hair on their heads.

Yeah, the peasants can’t text but the enforcer class can input into their on-board computers.

Time for a reset.

My niece was a teen going to work at a yogurt shop and waiting to make a left turn into a shopping center when she was hit from behind by a patrol car. The cop, apparently distracted, had taken his foot off the brake while in Drive and had drifted into her. She was stopped, legally yielding the right of way when it happened. He got out of his car, went to her window, and berated her for not moving. She was left shaken. Oh yes, I know there are good cops too. We just don’t know the percentage.

Well....if his ‘duties’ require him to recklessly use the computer....then it shouldn’t be too difficult to sue the ‘department’.

I hope his family does...and I hope it shines a light on what this prosecutor is saying:

“Any police function, no matter how trivial, justifies manslaughter.”

Pigs are the most irresponsible people in society. It is like dealing with children. Note, a professional would be expected to get such basic job requirements right. They are litterally saying a cop is not professional enough to even drive a car responsibly.

Keep pushing guys. Keep pushing.

Are there? They allow so much to happen unchecked, and won’t say a peep. Even ‘good cops’ play the Thin Blue Line game.that isn’t me definition of a good cop.
