Republican strategist and former John McCain consultant Steve Schmidt has joined the team helping Texas Gov. Rick Perry with the strategy around his indictment, POLITICO has learned.
Schmidt is the latest addition to a team that Perry has been expanding with legal hands.
The Republican governor, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, has been indicted for allegedly abusing his power by vetoing funding to the office of a Democratic prosecutor who wouldnt resign after a drunken driving arrest.
Were bringing in the best of the best to help us handle this this is serious, weve got to handle it with the appropriate measures, Perry spokesman Jeff Miller said.
Schmidt did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Earlier this week, POLITICOs Mike Allen reported that Perry had hired former Clinton White House special counsel Mark Fabiani to a team that already included Republican lawyer Ben Ginsberg.

Steve Schmidt? Say it ain’t so Rick! Schmidt is a recipe for disaster.
HE is not expanding his legal team.

You maybe correct in that his legal team for the Texas indictment is in place.
Sometimes when money is available you hire people for their contacts, etc rather
than their expertise.
Botsford is still the only criminal lawyer on the team and he is one of the best in Texas. The prosecutor also has a top reputation in criminal law. As does the judge.
The rest of them are political/PR lawyers, except for Buzbee who is a personal injury lawyer.
Schmidt isn't a lawyer, he is a campaign strategist and his biography calls him the "Lord of Outrage" and an elbows out campaigner.
The longer Perry stays on the Lehmbert attack, the worse it is. He has to go after the prosecutor McCrum.
This could get nasty.
Schmidt? Kiss of death.
San Antonio Defense Atty Accused Of Witness Tampering
Law360, Houston (January 10, 2014, 6:36 PM ET) -- A Texas white-collar defense attorney was hit with a motion for contempt Tuesday alleging he tried to persuade a witness to duck prosecutors so that she wouldn't testify against one of his clients.
Mike McCrum, a former federal prosecutor turned defense attorney based in San Antonio, was slapped with a motion for contempt alleging he instructed a witness to avoid being served with a subpoena so she wouldnt have to testify against a client facing intoxication manslaughter charges.
Poor La Raza Ricky just can’t buy a clue. This reminds me of Michele Bachmann hiring Ed Rollins for her campaign. It was as if the RINOs told her she wasn’t a serious candidate unless she paid one of their RINO minions to be on her staff. Rollins ran her campaign into the ground.
Looks like Rick wants to show them he’s serious too. He really wants to WIN! So he hires a controlling Romney RINO to run his future campaign into the ground. The problem is that you already have too much lib in your background history, Rick. You need to stay very far away from all of Mitt Romney’s handpicked saboteurs.
consultant Steve Schmidt is toxic sludge he ran John McCain’s presidential campaign
The sly hand of the GOPE strikes again. Any RNC-GOPE turd should be regulating to watching flies land on fresh cow manure at the nearest ranch and kept far-far away from anything related to a conservative campaign.
Perry will regret laying eyes on this weasel. On a side note all the FR GOPE shills breath a deep sigh of relief, one of their own in on the scene to stop the Perry campaign.
Was Meghan too busy?
It’s fun watching “FR republicans” eating a Republican who has worked and brought businesses to Texas, more businesses than past Governors. Keep going Friends, you may help hillery to fill nobama’s seat on AF 1.
Oh, crap, he’s doomed.
If you were Chuy, you’d be smiling too.
A) Who the **** told you I was Republican? FR is not a “Republican” site, which you should know as long as you’ve been here and (B) I’ll say whatever I want about mutha******* Steve Schmidt, Nicole Wallace, Meghan McCain, her father or ANYONE else I like. Don’t like that? Tuff.
That picture reminds me of the saying.... If those were brains....
Hard to believe Perry added that douchbag schimit to his team...
Well THAT’S not a Perry-hater post. Whatsa matter with you???
It’s also fun to discover that 95% of posters don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Gotta sift through a lotta debris here to find some info.
Its a insult to all Conservatives the fact that he hired Steve Schmidt.
I was just starting to warm up to Perry, I care not if he argues it was only for the legal team.
On top of it being offensive to Conservatives (at least this one) it shows lack of political smarts.
