British diplomats in Washington are apologizing for Twitter posts that made light of the 200th anniversary of their troops torching the White House in the War of 1812.

The apologies were prompted after the British Embassy posted a picture Sunday of Patrick Davis, deputy British ambassador to the United States, with a caption saying he was participating in "the anniversary of burning of the White House with a BBQ.”

The picture was followed by another, about an hour later, that showed a White House replica atop a sheet cake, flanked by sparklers. The caption said: “Commemorating the 200th anniversary of burning the White House. Only sparklers this time!”

Within hours of the tweets, the embassy received several angry Twitter responses and eventually backed off. "Apologies for earlier Tweet. We meant to mark an event in history & celebrate our strong friendship today," the embassy wrote.

Why apologize? What’s next? Do we have to apologize for July 4? Liberals

We rub it in the UK’s face every 4th of July...

Big deal, they burned a building...it was war and to them, it was a significant event in that war.

As always, you come completely unglued when somebody calls you out. Your Viet Nam remark was ill-timed and rude and you know it.

I don’t give a good goddam what your credentials are. There are perhaps a 100 people on Free Republic with Masters in history so don’t get so high and mighty. And I must say I always have to laugh when the CAPITAL LETTERS COME OUT and the use of “Madam” starts. That’s when I know someone has either lost the plot or lost the argument.

I know you’d like to think that the British lost the war to an elite fighting force that would make the Spartans look like marshmallows but the fact is that the Americans were underfunded, conscripted and rebellious. As I’ve said twice now, they did indeed turn themselves around (with the help of a few allies) and managed to rout the British. You’ll need to accept that fact one day - I hope. That is why I suggested Private Martin’s book - a primary source as I said and one I’m surprised you haven’t read since you are lecturing young minds full of mush, as Rush would say.

Now that I’ve had my usual argy-bargy with you, perhaps I’ll take my yearly visit to Monmouth Battlefield and bring flowers to rest in the tall grass where so many young British soldiers died from heat exposure. May their souls rest in peace.

An American was showing some British tourists around Washington, DC, and remarked, "You know, the British burned Washington in 1814."

The Brits were shocked. "We knew we burned Joan of Arc, but we thought Washington died of natural causes."

The early census records for some states (such as Virginia) are missing, and it’s thought that they were destroyed during the British attack on Washington. So some Americans doing genealogical research in that period are still negatively affected by what the British did.

There’s a reason for that:

Their diet: tea and crumpets.

Our diet: raw squirrel meat and whiskey.

Unfortunate, I agree...however, do you honestly believe that the Brits really gave a damn?

Not to sound too snarky, but it’s not like the Brits sat around thinking about how the could screw the progeny of those Americans a couple of hundred years into the future...

If we weren’t willing to suffer the consequences of our own actions, we shouldn’t have burned down the Canadian capitol, no?

I’m still not offended by the cake, nor the Brits recognizing what, to them, is a significant event...it’s THEIR history they’re celebrating.

Only because they asked us to. And it was just a few buildings full of hockey sticks.

I think the burning of York was the work of some out-of-control soldiers, and it might not have happened if the American commander had not just been killed. The burning of Washington was a deliberate act by the British commander.

It might be like George W. Bush nuking Mecca in retaliation for the attacks on the World Trade Center.

If that was true, wouldn’t we have burned Baltimore?

I’ve been to Canada a number of times but haven’t had the courage yet to try poutine. However, you might be correct..it might taste great.

People don’t have much of a sense of either history or humor!

What a cool thing!!

I’d absolutely go to a BBQ celebrating the event! I love the Brits and their sense of humor. I’m a little tired of them apologizing all the time, actually.

It sounds delicious to me! Gravy, cheese and French fries! Toronto has great restaurants.

It was the Baltimore-based movie “Diner” that had the leads always eating French fries and gravy.

Have you ever been to a Brit Bar-B-Que? It ain’t “Giant”! My friends in Oxfordshire served up tiny, wizened pieces of beef that could have taken out a few molars if I hadn’t dumped them behind the two failing fig trees...

Now, I will say, Brits serve up wonderful alcohol! These same people, on that same night, served up bottles and bottles of Moet Chandon. And they were so charming (although one of the British guests got upsest when I corrected her that it was Abraham Lincoln who got assassinated, not George Washington.)that it more than made up for that weird beef.

Food is not their long suit. You’ve heard the joke about Heaven and Hell, right?

In Heaven, the police are British, the chefs are French, and the trains are run by the Germans.

In Hell, the police are German, the chefs are British, and the trains are run by the French.

Apparently, the food in Ireland has improved markedly, from reports I get from a friend who runs a hedge fund over there.

The Brits are my favorite, as are the Jews.

Well, I’m a bit of an Anglophile myself but I refuse to be a fool about them, either. (My tagline has to do with an English king.)

English and Irish foods are absolutely delicious if well-prepared. Too many people (like us) take too many short cuts and turn great dishes into horrors. (And to lurkers: get rid of that Bird’s Custard unless you are thickening gravy!!!!) I really don’t think the Brits should be fooling around with bar-be-que: the average American gets it wrong. Let’s leave it to our Texas friends, lol!
