British Embassy holds a party to commemorate anniversary of the burning of the White House

British diplomats in the US have been forced to apologise after revealing they were hosting a party to celebrate the anniversary of the burning of the White House.

The British Embassy in Washington held a ‘White House barbeque’ yesterday to mark the two hundredth anniversary of Britain capturing the US capital and setting fire to the President’s iconic address.

The Embassy even sent a message on Twitter from its official account with a photograph of a White House cake, flanked by British and American flags and surrounded by sparkler fireworks.

I recently read a book that described the War of 1812 as an American civil war.

Indeed I would go so far as to say the War of Independence was a civil war, not fought between Americans fighting to overthrow foreign “British” rule but between British Americans with different opinions about how to govern the place.

Revere didn’t shout “The British are coming!” as post-war revisionists made out because they all regarded themselves as British, but “The regulars are coming!” a different thing entirely posing the struggle not as a fight against foreign oppressors but between the forces of an over-bearing state and local volunteer militias, who were fighting for freedom from central government and their hired minions.

You can see why federally funded state employees in government-run schools find such an idea frightening and prefer to brainwash the children into believing the war was against foreigners.

Canada actually kicked our asses during the War of 1812 and we were forced to retreat from Ontario.

Would they please do it again? During a full Cabinet meeting? A meeting the includes the Joint Chiefs and Chamber of Crony Capitalism? Possibly the leaders of the House and Senate?

Pretty please?

We should hold a party commemorating the Battle of New Orleans where British suffered the most lopsided of all defeats, ironically after the war was officially over.

We do, at the battlefield in Chalmette, Louisiana. Annually.

The next anniversary of the battle is the bicentennial, so it'll be a much larger event than usual.

Hmm, wonder if they’ll be commemorating the taking of Fort Bowyer, Alabama by the British, shortly after the Battle of New Orleans? News of the end of the war was the only thing that stopped Britain from taking Mobile Alabama afterwards.

Given that Obama has already burned and buried the Constitution, what’s the harm?

The only way it would have been a civil war is IF the only troops fighting were the folks for revolution who lived in America and the folks who were against revolution who lived in America. That was not the case. The crown sent troops (British and others) to fight those who were in revolt.

The fact that you actually thought Paul Revere said “The British are coming” (while a popular meme and too often taught) just says you don’t read enough history.

While I was reminded last night on another thread who won the war of 1812 is a subject of debate, we still won the war that mattered. A victory we celebrate every July 4th.

I was not offended. It made me laugh.
I’m over it. Let the Brits have their sparklers.

Agreed. I'd give them some petrol if they wanted to burn it down again, actually.

“The fact that you actually thought Paul Revere said “The British are coming” (while a popular meme and too often taught) just says you don’t read enough history.”

The fact that you completely misread what I actually wrote about what Revere said just says you have difficulty with understanding basic English. I have a degree in history.

I said very clearly in my post:

“Revere didn’t shout “The British are coming!” “

You said:

“The fact that you actually thought Paul Revere said “The British are coming” “

You therefore misread my post. Stop bothering me.
