And this is where I disagree with most libertarians. I have started to lean more toward the libertarian side the last few years, but I can’t go full libertarian because of abortion and national security issues.

It always amuses me to see some political neophyte claim to be a libertarian; yet in the same breath claim to be against this or that which libs support.

See tagline.

Many (but not all) libertarians are isolationists, and so would be reluctant to confront ISIS. But consider this. If Jimmy Carter had been an isolationist, the Shah of Iran would still be in power. And if Bush II had been an isolationist, Saddam would still be in power.

Then there probably would be no ISIS in the first place.

There are times were this sort of argument would fail (example: the first Gulf War), but it is something to think about.

A certain amount of small-l libertarianism is essential to conservatism (e.g., small government, less laws, less taxes (and taxes to raise revenue, not control people), government is not to be confused with your parent, etc.

And this is because government is, by nature, liberal in a secular nation. So the government needs to be weak and small.

But purist libertarianism does not work, especially at the border of the USA.

Are we really any more secure now? Also remember Bush invaded Iraq because ...? We’ve lost how many lives from all these adventures and what do we have to show for it? Republicans and Demo-rats are two sides of the same coin with both of them pushing us towards some corrupt oligarchy police state. Freedom? What is that in Amerika?

There’s a weird kind of pie-in-the-sky “utopianist” mindset to libertarianism that I’m extremely uncomfortable with. Just reminds me too much of the hippie-liberal way of thinking, even when positions/issues aren’t necessarily alligned.

I reject isolationism because we dare nt wait for threats to come to us. But i also reject the “neo-con” concept of nation-building. My current attitude on our war posture should be:

1) Announce our displeasure with the actions of a nation-state or other group and given them a reasonable opportunity to modify their ways in order to avoid our ire.

2) If (when) #1 fails, use massively disproportionate force; i.e., bomb them into rubble.

3) Bomb the rubble into dust.

4) Provide temporary humanitarian assistance to non-combatants affected by our actions.

5) Get out.

Now, we may have to repeat this a few times until people get the hint that we’re serious, but that’s still a lot better than some of the quagmires we’ve gotten ourselves into.

"Time for Libertarians to Put on Their Big Boy Pants"

If Libertarians had big boy pants they would not be Libertarians. Libertarianism has got to be the most childish philosophy out there. It's basically an assertion that "I Won't Behave, and you can't make me!"

This guy gets it.

Doctrinaire Libertarianism is slow motion suicide.

And I'm mostly libertarian.

National Libertarian. Libertarianism with a strong Nationalist bent.

So what is the priority?

Conservatives and libertarians could agree to accomodations, and win elections, with most getting most of what they want.

Or they could argue, run multiple candidates, split votes, and give the dems wins with less than 50%.

The one aspect missing today, is adding to the ranks of the tabulated vote total for the center-right.

Today there simply are not the equivalents of Reagan and Friedman, who “sold” conservatism to voters and grew the numbers.

Lots of low info types here on FR purposely confuse the liberal Libertarian party with philosophical libertarianism that our founders favored.

The problem I have with a good chunk of Libertarians is that they want the freedom but eschew the Responibility that comes with it....

That and they don’t realize that free trade can only occur between two countries that are on near equal footing...

I’m pretty much an independent conservative because I cannot agree with the dovish pro-abortion and pro-drug libertarian platform. The end. I support conservatism at its core.
