Metro Vancouver' port authority has approved construction of a controversial coal-shipping facility in a major marine terminal.
Fraser Surrey Docks has been given a permit by Port Metro Vancouver to build the facility along the Fraser River that will handle four million metric tonnes of coal each year.
Environmentalists, many residents and the region's medical health officers have expressed concerns about the effect on air quality and potential harm to the surrounding environment.
Peter Xotta, of Port Metro Vancouver, says the decision was not taken lightly but a comprehensive review found there were no unacceptable risks from the development.
Fraser Surrey Docks hired SNC Lavalin to review the proposal, and the resulting report concluded there would be no significant adverse effects to the environment or people's health.
The proposed facility would transfer coal from rail cars to barges, which would then carry the coal to nearby Texada Island to be shipped to Asia.
Canada
China
North American coal is vastly being shipped to global polluter China because we are too EC (”environmentally correct”) to burn it for the benefit of our own people
To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.
Canada Ping!
China- burning the coal that Canadian’s aren’t willing to burn.
Dang. I thought it might be my Vancouver, WA.
Good Lord, you’d think they were handling nuclear waste......geez. We have a coal fired generating plant in my city and to my knowledge there has never been any sort of safety issue and it's delivered by cargo ship via a main waterway.
Assuming that Canada is awash in coal just as we are it would only make sense for them to produce as much as they can.
Don't know if you've ever been to China but I have.Several times.Recently.In all the days I've spent there (and in Hong Kong/Macau) the clearest day I've ever seen there is 50 times worse than the worst day I've ever seen in LA...San Francisco...London...the Ruhr Valley...you name it.
It's so bad there that you can barely breathe!
Which is another reason to burn it here. I’ve seen modern coal plants with scrubbers in place and from the look of the smokestacks you’d swear they were idle.
Oh, and can you imagine what our cities would look like had Edison won the Current War? He envisioned a power plant on every block!
