I was going by the figures in the 2012 World Almanac, which predates Putin's seizure of Crimea. It gives France's land area as 247,126 square miles (640,053 square kilometers), and Ukraine's as 223,681 square miles (579,330 square kilometers).

If you go by total area rather than land area, France is still larger than Ukraine (248,573 sq. mi. vs. 233,032 sq. mi.).

I think the operative word is "Europe". France still has colonies, so parts of France are actually not IN Europe (France métropolitaine vs. France d'outre-mer, i.e. overseas France). AFAIK metropolitan France is only around 550,000 sq km / 210,000 sq mi.
