ADVERTISE AT BOING BOING!

A news crew, clearly no threat or impediment to the cops, films from a verge in Ferguson, Missouri. A pop and a cloud of white smoke marks the arrival of a tear gas canister at their feet, and the newscrew is forced to flee. Moments later, police pull up in an armored van and hurriedly try to break down the film equipment--until they notice that another crew is still filming them from across the street.
Update: Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America, released a statement condemning the police.
Last night at 9:30 CDT in Ferguson, Missouri, an Al Jazeera America news crew was reporting behind police barricades. They were easily identifiable as a working television crew. As they were setting up their camera for a live report, tear gas canisters landed in their proximity and police fired rubber bullets in their direction. Police continued to shoot after crew members clearly and repeatedly shouted Press. Al Jazeera America is stunned by this egregious assault on freedom of the press that was clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story. Thankfully all three crew members are physically fine. We believe that this situation must be investigated along with those involving our colleagues at other media outlets.
“1st amendment only applicable when government decides.”
In this case, it would appear that the government decided to tear gas the news crew and dismantle their equipment.
I have seen this on many TV sites and have yet to see or hear they
“Stole” the equipment. They did lay the lights on the ground and turn/point the camera towards the ground.
Just saying.
Unbelievable!
What the hell were those thugs thinking?
If I were the governor I’d seize tha PD, dismantle it, and run them up on charges!
It’s like watching the gestapo in their early days...

Interesting. Even as a Prosecutor I almost never believed the police first. It took getting burned more times than I can count, but until I could trust an officer, I didn’t believe them. Didn’t mean I believed the perp of course.
However, I sure used the fact that I knew juries would “believe the police” to my advantage. I never put forth a known lie. Ever. But I knew that if there was a conflict in stories I would win 99% of the time.
It’s one of the reasons I finally retired. If American knew how much power just their State governments had, they would freak.
You have to ask yourself why are the police wearing jungle camo that was originally worn by our military in the jungles of South East Asia? What are they trying to terrorize the public?
Did you see when the police are taking down the camera? One of the officers is providing cover. As if they were in Afghanistan or Iraq. How pathetic and what a joke!
I saw that woman on live stream with her young child on her shoulders. Why she would bring a young child to a protest which on previous nights turned violent, I don’t know. Kid should have been left at home. What if something awful had happened to this child?
She must belong to Hamas.
I bet if a mob of looters came down the street this clown, that pretends he is Afghanistan, would be running in full retreat. Just like they did the other night. What a joke!
In my most Humble opinion, she belongs to STUPID for doing that.
The ATF kicked the crap out the newscrew they invited to the Waco raid when it went bad (day one). It got caught on video but was not released for YEARS.
Can anyone say Al-Jazeera? I'll make an exception in their case! Should'a shot the whole bunch.
(Is the < /sarc > tag really necessary?)
Destroying another's private property is the violent manifestation of socialism. Conservatives are supposed to be repelled by it.
She staged the event. She wanted to create an image that would drive a narrative that was different, and better to her cause, than what would otherwise be available for public consumption.
I’m not letting the cops off the hook. This is just a swipe at the media which IS supposed to be able to identfy staged events and either ignore them, or accurately report them as such.
Like earlier posters said, there doesn’t seem to be any good sides here.
Sniping at cops would not be totally unexpected in a riot situation. Cover is like insurance; you have it and hope you don't need it.
The one, and the only, thing you can be certain of is that you are being lied to.
Same with the military. In the past I would bet that police and military personnel were reliably the most conservative of people. The left has effectively demonized both and has actively worked to replace them with leftists.
She wanted the attention all right. I wonder how she’d have felt if a rubber bullet or Molotov hit her kid? To take a child to something that you knew had been violent is abusive and Selfish.
No one is sniping at cops taking down cameras. LOL! S.M.H.
It’s ridiculous and overkill. Like I said if a mob of looters came towards them, then that cop would be in full retreat.
Agreed.
My sister spent some time in Italy during college. Came back with stories of seeing Gypsy women throw their babies AT tourists to distract them as they were being robbed.
I won’t even take my kids to participate in what I know will be peaceful protests. They aren’t, IMHO, old enough to give their consent to be part of political activism. Using them as human shields/props, as this woman clearly does, is despicable.
Yup, I will be on the cops side all the way up until that unlawful order is given... Now we have problems as far as I am concerned...
