A news crew, clearly no threat or impediment to the cops, films from a verge in Ferguson, Missouri. A pop and a cloud of white smoke marks the arrival of a tear gas canister at their feet, and the newscrew is forced to flee. Moments later, police pull up in an armored van and hurriedly try to break down the film equipment--until they notice that another crew is still filming them from across the street.
Update: Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America, released a statement condemning the police.
Last night at 9:30 CDT in Ferguson, Missouri, an Al Jazeera America news crew was reporting behind police barricades. They were easily identifiable as a working television crew. As they were setting up their camera for a live report, tear gas canisters landed in their proximity and police fired rubber bullets in their direction. Police continued to shoot after crew members clearly and repeatedly shouted Press. Al Jazeera America is stunned by this egregious assault on freedom of the press that was clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story. Thankfully all three crew members are physically fine. We believe that this situation must be investigated along with those involving our colleagues at other media outlets.
You can trust NPR, CNN and anyone you like but I don’t. There’s also Post 14.
You have made that point 3 or 4 times now. I think we get it.
The lights were shining in the faces of the police who were watching the area. Hard to see up a street with a bank of camera lights shining in your eyes.
I can see they felt they had an “officer safety” issue.
So why not have an officer just walk over, explain the situation and tell them they can keep filming - but cut the lights. If they refused they have at ‘um.
They should turn in their uniforms for pink ones.
I have no sympathy for either side.
I don’t have TV. I don’t trust any of them. And video, edited video, is dangerous when it comes from the left.
So, you don’t trust your eyes? Are they defective somehow?
The tape clearly shows a news crew far away from any police activity, setting up, getting gasses, then the police attempt to steal their equipment by first dismantling it. They get caught by the other video crew and confront them.
What part of gassing a TV crew do you support?
Nope. Did you see Post 14?
Seems they were filming from a verge. A ridge I would understand, or a hill,or a platform, or a sidewalk or a grassy knoll, but it was a verge. ?????? A verge of insanity, or of infamy, maybe on the verge of mayhem; no just a verge. ??
We can’t suspend liberty at the trough of dislike for an organization. I honestly would like to see some Tea Partiers start showing up there, on the side of the protesters. Not in support of their looting or vandalism, but to show against the militarization of police and excessive force.

I don’t trust the left, why do you?
Thanks, DJ. I’m not surprised.
I was impressed by the gentle handling of the crew’s equipment. Nothing was knocked over or visibly abused. The lights were laid gently on the ground and the camera was tilted downward. Did not seem abusive at all.
I am of the minority opinion that the best thing for everyone in the
“Ferguson Quagmire” is for the “Police” to remove themselves from participation for the next 30 days and let the “people” of Ferguson take whatever actions they wish!
“I dont trust the left, why do you?”
I don’t trust the left or the right, why do you?
If you can’t trust a video shot from wide angle and without interruptions, then I guess you need to go live in a cave and write out your manifesto by candlelight.
Your link is not working.
” I hope your town gets assaulted by out-of-town rioters like Ferguson just did.”
Bless your heart, aren’t you precious!
“The press was told to turn off camera’s “
That is NOT a lawful order.
