A news crew, clearly no threat or impediment to the cops, films from a verge in Ferguson, Missouri. A pop and a cloud of white smoke marks the arrival of a tear gas canister at their feet, and the newscrew is forced to flee. Moments later, police pull up in an armored van and hurriedly try to break down the film equipment--until they notice that another crew is still filming them from across the street.
Update: Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America, released a statement condemning the police.
Last night at 9:30 CDT in Ferguson, Missouri, an Al Jazeera America news crew was reporting behind police barricades. They were easily identifiable as a working television crew. As they were setting up their camera for a live report, tear gas canisters landed in their proximity and police fired rubber bullets in their direction. Police continued to shoot after crew members clearly and repeatedly shouted ‘Press’. Al Jazeera America is stunned by this egregious assault on freedom of the press that was clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story. Thankfully all three crew members are physically fine. We believe that this situation must be investigated along with those involving our colleagues at other media outlets.
This is how they react to the presence of the press, with their cumbersome equipment.
The legislature in California has passed a bill mandating a remotely activated kill switch in all cell phones and other devices, which will enable the police to murder people (as they have been trained to do) without being videoed.
However, the police 3rd world military tactics IMO is backfiring on them in the eyes of the public. It makes them look very guilty and validates what other people are saying about them.
I view this incident in the same light as if you or I had tear gassed a group of people doing their job and then we proceeded to dismantle and seize their work equipment.
If we were to do such a thing, we would go to prison and I hold the police to the very same expectations.

Fair enough, and it seems we are both concerned that some people are willing to condone these actions by the police in the USA but would strongly object to similar actions by police in some other country.

Western Journalism has this, which supposedly just is breaking. (Fatal shot fired from within car and social media misidentified the officer involved resulting in death threats)
Police did, however, offer some insight into the events leading up to the shooting. According to reports, Brown was with a friend at an apartment complex when the officer attempted to get out of his cruiser.
The teen reportedly initiated an altercation, pushing the officer back into the vehicle and struggling to retrieve his weapon. A fatal shot was then fired within the car, police confirm.

I’m sorry - but I don’t keep seperate ping lists for that. These are all important developments in the fight against police militirization which is an important issue to libertarians (and should be to conservatives). My ping members want to know about them.
Might be better if I just removed you for a few weeks until this Ferguson mess dies down. There are probably going to be a lot of these until that quells.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. The only thing I can think is that perhaps this was not the area of violence, it was daytime, and she wouldn’t be there at dusk.
