Many skywatchers love August because the ever-reliable Perseid meteor shower peaks mid-month, but unfortunately, this year's usually brilliant meteor display may be spoiled by a bright full moon.
The Perseid shower is expected to reach its peak at 8 p.m. EDT on August 12. The bright moon will rise the around 9:30 p.m. eastern time on Aug. 12 and 13, and shine brightly the rest of the night. To make matters worse, the full moon rising Sunday (Aug. 10) will be brighter than it usually is because this full moon, called a "supermoon," will be the closest of 2014.
Despite the bright, nearly full moon, stargazers should still be able to catch sight of some Perseid meteors. The best nights to look for Perseids will be this week rather than next. Thats because the Moon will be setting earlier in the night, leaving a moonless pre-dawn sky to observe meteors. The meteors themselves will be less frequent, because its well before their peak, but the darker moonless sky will make them easier to see.
Pouring rain here in the northeast. :(
Super Moon?
Would that be the Super Moon that the MSM has been pounding down our throats every August for the past 3 years?
WTH? Guess they need a story that is ok to print.
“To make matters worse, the full moon rising Sunday (Aug. 10) will be brighter than it usually is...”
I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin’.
I see bad times today.
Don’t go around tonight,
Well, it’s bound to take your life,
There’s a bad moon on the rise.
I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
Don’t go around tonight,
Well, it’s bound to take your life,
There’s a bad moon on the rise.
All right!
Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we’re in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.
Don’t go around tonight,
Well, it’s bound to take your life,
There’s a bad moon on the rise.

Obsessed with m. showers for almost 20 years now. 17 years ago, in west Texas, I saw an MS that defies the word power of even Shakespeare to describe. ‘Twas not to be believed.
Fab tune, bro!
Setting the alarm for 3am. I’ll go out and lie in the damp grass and gaze at the Creation.
I saw the Leonid Shower, I think it was, from a fairly dark sky in Long Island around 10 years or so ago. Scared the hades out of me. Felt like running for cover at times. Huge thick smoke trails that lingered for half an hour. Green and yellow fireballs. Some lit up the sky like daytime.
SOOPER MOON SHOULD NOT BE SEEN!!!
Yes! Yes! When you catch a good one, you are spellbound for life!
Good one. The MSM is suddenly becoming “moon crazy.” Every single moon phase now has a label, and is “once in a lifetime.” It’s f’ing ridiculous.
Was it NOV? The Leo’s are in NOV, I believe.
Yes, they are in Nov. I think it was Nov.
Back in the early 80’s, we were sailing offshore to Maine in mid August. Wife and I happened to get the 8pm to midnight watch.
Once sundown, we had the most incredible show of the persied meteors, shooting stars across the sky.
Once they kind of calmed down, the Northern lights cranked up, into a fantastic yellow-green dance across the northern sky.
One of those times that a camera could never capture, but sights that will live in my mind for the rest of my life!
Here in Arizona, we can count on overcast skies during the Perseids. This evening, it’s raining here, with thunder and lightning. I’d love to see the Perseids someday.
Wow! The NLs AND the Perseids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God really digs you, bro!
Saw some last night.
Awesome.
Luv August....
