Your approach smacks of the turn the other cheek, be nice and smile when they get in your face Believe me, I don't believe in turning the other cheek. I just believe in fighting smarter. I have been involved in campaigns in the past, and my tactics were generally to make fun of the other side in such a way that infuriates them, but isn't seen as "Mean" by the average Joe.
I suggest people show up with signs and funny costumes, perhaps other props if they can think of something clever, and things which will also not give the media any ammunition.
I'm trying to think of some ideas, but the first thing that jumped into my mind was "Bandito" costumes. That probably wouldn't play well, though the image of Mexican illegals could be accurately mocked by the stereotypical "Bandito" image.
The Media would portray it as "RACIST" of course, so I would suggest against it. Might piss off Cruz as well, but it's that sort of thinking out of the box that we need.

It was a tongue in cheek suggestion but the concept of getting in their face is not. If you worry about being called a racist by these dirtbags then you’ve already lost. They’ve intimidated you into submission.
They don’t care about nice, mocking, funny or anything else. They are hardcore, win at any cost fascists and calling their opposition racists is part of their tactics of intimidation because it works on those who take it seriously when it is obviously not true.
