(Islamist) Erdogan emerges victorious in Turkish presidential elections amid low turnout

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the country’s first direct presidential election on Sunday, and issued a message of unity, saying he would be a president for everyone.

“I will not be the president of only those who voted for me, I will be the president of 77 million,” Erdogan said in a victory speech delivered from the balcony of his Justice and Development Party headquarters in Ankara.

“Today the national will won once again, today democracy won once again,” he told thousands of flag-waving, cheering supporters. “Those who didn’t vote for me won as much as those who did, those who don’t like me won as much as those who do.”

With 99% of ballot boxes counted, Erdogan had 51.95% of the vote, according to figures from the state-run Anadolu news agency, which had reporters at ballot counting stations across the country. Opposition candidate Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, a former diplomat and academic had 38.34% and the third candidate, Selahattin Demirtas, had 9.71%.

Supreme Election Council head Sadi Guven said Erdogan had won but that no official results would be released until Monday.

Erdogan’s win was expected: recent opinion polls had him far ahead of Ihsanoglu, 70, and Demirtas,41, co-chairs of the pro-Kurdish Democratic People’s party (HDP).

And his first action after learning the results:

As the results came out, Erdogan briefly addressed hundreds of supporters in Istanbul before praying at the Eyup Sultan mosque.

You might ask, "so what"?

Eyup Sultan mosque is known for:

The sultans succeeding Mehmet the Conqueror completed their coronation and sword-bearing ceremonies with a visit to the Eyup Sultan Mausoleum.

No symbolism to consider here, right?

In 1999, I was on a Mediterranean cruise which stopped at Istanbul. Our female tour guide was attired in western clothing — dress shirt and pants. During a stop for lunch, she sat at our table and we started talking about a number of things, including the political climate. The guide said the country had been a secular democracy, but upcoming parliamentary elections could mean more “conservative” Muslims would gain control. She worried that if these “conservatives” seized power, the freedoms she enjoyed as a woman would be gone — for example, that she would no longer be allowed to wear western attire.

Back then, the significance of our conversation escaped me simply because I was clueless as to Sharia law and the menace of these religious fanatics. I know better now. I think about the tour guide and wonder how her life may have changed, possibly for the worse.

Erdogan , Iran and Spain’s leftwing Zapatero were behind the “Alliance of Civilizations” scheme that popped into the threads here a few years ago when the Obama & muslim countries began teaming up in an attack on our free speech rights. The AoC was also joined by the UN. The democrats were visiting Istanbul a lot in those days.

One of the recommendations in the AoC report of the UN was a recommendation there should be a “broad based international campaign to censor and influence media representations of muslims...” etc, etc. They wanted training schools for journalists, waves of academic op eds, control of the internet, etc.

Look up the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue, and ASMA.

The AoC originally was spawned by Iran’s so-called “moderate” that the left was al gaga over. It was taken up by Zapatero, and then Erdogan, and a Malaysian who was pretty tied up with the Iraq bribe scheme as I recall.

The AoC morphed into the “Dialogue of Civilizations” and set up its headquarters next to the UN HQ in NY City. Khofi Annan appointed his pal Picco, also a guy involved in the Oil for Food scandal- to run the DoC.

Erdogan and Zapatero made their proposal to create the “Alliance” at the 59th UN General Assembly circa 2005 ...
This also spawned the Cordoba Initiative / Ground Zero Mosque nonsense. The imam in that fiasco was a backer of the GAza Flotilla where the IHH, a Turkish group on board one of the vessels, and apparently some leftwing loons jumped the Israelis coming on board.

Another guy KOfi Annan got involved in the “Alliance was named Riza. Riza was also involved in Oil For Food and is notable for the vast number of documents he shredded to keep ahead of any investigation, not that the investigators were ever serious.

Correction- I think the DoC preceded the AoC.

There’s the “Istanbul Process” that Hillary was pushing. I suppose the same country that is building a mega mosque here is going to fund her campaign too.
