Russian intervention in Ukraine, including for expressed humanitarian purposes is unacceptable without Kievs authorization, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her US counterpart Barack Obama agreed in a telephone call Saturday.

The Bundeswehr is only second behind the USA in international deployments. The Treaty of Lisbon already obliges EU member states to unite under one military command, besides; if the rest of the EU suddenly gets up the will, things could be a lot different.
It should be noted that in surveys, Poland is actually the most gung-ho about deploying troops to Ukraine, not Germany. The northern former Soviet states/satellites are the epicenter of fear of an aggressive, expansionist Russia. Germany and the other central/western European powers are rather moderate against the threat, with a lot of the Obama-esque dithering that has long characterized EU foreign policy.
They have a huge economic army.
Russia is Saudi with weapons.
The Poles understandably love the idea of another country as a buffer between them and their Russian “Brothers”. And Ukrainians wish they had that option.

Most would like to be friendly with a Russia, but Putin is doing his best to change that.
