Russian intervention in Ukraine, including for expressed humanitarian purposes is “unacceptable” without Kiev’s authorization, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her US counterpart Barack Obama agreed in a telephone call Saturday.

Such a move “violates international law, and will provoke additional consequences,” the White House said in a statement afterwards, referencing the numerous economic sanctions already in place against Moscow. …

The Bundeswehr is only second behind the USA in international deployments. The Treaty of Lisbon already obliges EU member states to unite under one military command, besides; if the rest of the EU suddenly gets up the will, things could be a lot different.

It should be noted that in surveys, Poland is actually the most gung-ho about deploying troops to Ukraine, not Germany. The northern former Soviet states/satellites are the epicenter of fear of an aggressive, expansionist Russia. Germany and the other central/western European powers are rather moderate against the threat, with a lot of the Obama-esque dithering that has long characterized EU foreign policy.

The Poles understandably love the idea of another country as a buffer between them and their Russian “Brothers”. And Ukrainians wish they had that option.

not really about the Ukrainians. Most ukrainians are kind of ambivalent -- the ones I've met say that they and Russians are the same people and can't understand Putin's aggression.

Putin may be the one who really creates the sense of nationhood in the Ukraine

Most would like to be friendly with a Russia, but Putin is doing his best to change that.

Putin had a chance when he first came to office to lead against the problems in the West. It was a golden opportunity.

But instead he has become a tyrant and a supporter of evil around the world.

He has failed.
