The NCAAs Division I Board of Directors voted through a new and potentially groundbreaking measure Thursday when it approved the Big Five athletic conferences ability to govern themselves and push through rules changes as they see fit.
After the boards 16-2 vote in Indianapolis, five conferences: the Southeastern Conference, ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pacific-12 will have autonomy to vote on prospective changes that could change the face of college sports.
One of the first topics expected to be addressed in the coming months is whether amateur athletes in the NCAAs highest-revenue sports, namely football and mens basketball, are entitled to additional benefits, including a stipend.

Big Five expected to announce that all starting football and basketball players have full immunity from prosecution of any state or local crimes.
Goodbye football for all the other schools.
The ncaa is getting sued by so many entities, their legal team must have their heads on swivels.
This is giving up power before it is taken from you.
Standards?
We don’t need no stinkin’ standards.
No problem, that has been the lib arts dept motto for years.
As far as football goes, the NCAA is dead.
ESPN runs college football.
Even more so now with the sec network.
I must say, I don’t like where it’s heading
I like Saturday afternoon games on campus, not this Thursday night game crap.
And yes, I think it was a better world when we didn’t have playoffs, and we had the traditional New Years’ Day bowl games.
Now it’s just NFL-lite.
IRS has been very active in redefining subcontractors and others as employees over the last few years. I expect that IRS will at some point decide that a stipend and other benefits are enough to re-class these college athletes as employees and the schools as operators of a semipro league. Then they can pay taxes with their revenues instead of funding Olympic sports.
The schools can dispense with fantasy that these players are student athletes. The unions will come in and at some point they will decide that older players that are not good enough for the NFL can still play in the college semipro league.
I only get to 2 Football games/year and always have fun, but it’s expensive - nearly $1K per trip when it’s all added up.
I enjoy following PSU Volleyball and Wrestling nearly as much as Football. I wish B1G Network would expand their coverage of both sports.
Weekly call girl service for starters?
It’s a fairly clever way for the NCAA to dodge the bullet. Let the super conferences make the rules, so they wind up running the NCAA instead of replacing it like they were planning. Who wants to be the NCAA pres went into that meeting asking “so what do I need to agree to to keep my cushy job?”
Actually this probably bodes well for non-revenue sports. They can finally do Title 9 the way the law was written (equal opportunity) not the way the NCAA has been enforcing it (equal headcount). They’re going to get freed up from a lot of bad rules.
Maybe UF can finally get an ice hockey team.
Heh. If Muschamp keeps going the way he is he will end up the head coach of the hockey team.
I don’t want that guy even coaching the debate team.
Hmm....The govt is happy with dropping men’s non-revenue sports.
Does women’s softball make a profit anywhere? ESPN televises a few games anyway - it draws as many viewers as NHL; maybe more.
Women’s basketball makes a profit at a handful of schools...not enough to compete with the men though.
and let them then pay taxes on it and form unions....I don't care....but there is nothign sacrosanct about stinking college football and basketfall, and I am a season ticket holder in both...
