Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) criticized President Obamas decision to conduct airstrikes on Sunni fighters in Iraq.
Airstrikes are the wrong response to this situation, Hanabusa said Thursday. Getting involved in airstrikes moves us a dangerous step closer to direct involvement in Iraqs sectarian civil war, an entanglement we must avoid.
On Thursday, Obama said he authorized the military airstrikes in an effort to help Kurdish fighters and refugees under siege from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The Islamic militants recently gained control of a dam and cut off water supplies to parts of the region.
Obama also authorized humanitarian airdrops of water and other supplies to help refugees who have fled from ISIS.
I fully support humanitarian aid to those trapped by ISIS in the Sinjar Mountains, Hanabusa said. We cannot allow a humanitarian crisis to draw us into a war that would again cost the Iraqi people far too much in destruction and lives lost.
Hanabusa is running against Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) for the Senate in Obama's home state this November. Schatz hasnt commented about Obamas decision to use airstrikes in Iraq.
“all we are saying....is Give ISIS a Chance!”
Should have carpet-bombed ISIS with hash-tags.
Democrat’s War On Children.
This time we are trying save Non Muslims from Murdering Muslims....Full support is needed.
Remember Rwanda, Hanabusa?
I want less intervention in the world but we own this one and have a moral responsibility to make as many inert ISIS fighters as possible.
No boots on the ground though.
No troops unless we decide to evacuate the people on the mountain.
If those were Muslims in those mountains she’d be pounding her fist on the table demanding military action to protect them.
Insertion of Marine Scout-Sniper teams.
I am utterly ashamed that this peace at any cost quasi-Buddhist is the best we have to offer for election to the U.S. Senate . I see so many election signs in folks yards for her and I am just stunned how many people can be so stupid . Don’t they know? I am advising everyone I know to vote against her , even thought the alternative is hardly any better . And of course the R candidate does even register in the polling . Sad situation .
Agreed, just perimeter defense during evac.
I also think its time to voice support for an independent Kurdish state. Screw Turkey, Iran, and Iraq.
This gal okays feeding and watering these trapped thousands, only before they die, but keeping them unarmed and defenseless, with no way out to freedom and safety.
I'm not holding my breath, after all a Republican president bombing Iraq -BAD!, a Democrat president bombing Iraq - Good!
Remember this is the personage who defeated Charles Djou in 2012. Djou, a Republican had won a special election... I think the Hawaiian votes suffer from too much sun... Knee-jerk liberalism and a level of cowardice.
Hawaii is a welfare state
The way the Kurds are getting their butts handed to them by IS, it looks like their fighting capabilities have been way overestimated.
