CNN Poll: Trust in government at all-time low

Washington (CNN) – Four decades after President Richard Nixon resigned, a slight majority of Americans still consider Watergate a very serious matter, a new national survey shows. But how serious depends on when you were born.

The CNN/ORC International poll's release comes one day before the 40th anniversary of Nixon's resignation on August 9, 1974. With the Watergate scandal escalating, the second-term Republican president had lost much of his political backing, and he faced almost certain impeachment and the prospects of being removed from office by a Democratic-dominated House and Senate.

There's a big generational divide over the significance of the scandal, with a majority of those older than 40 describing Watergate as a very serious problem and those under 40 saying it was just politics.

The poll also indicates that the public's trust in government is at an all-time low.

In the end, Nixon didn’t destroy the tapes, even though he knew how damaging they were. The Dems learned from him, all right.

Amazing how they camo Obama’s illegal actions by dragging out poor old Nixon’s corpse. Never fails, and if Nixon doesn’t fit then its Bush time.

"The number who trust the government all or most of the time has sunk so low that it is hard to remember that there was ever a time when Americans routinely trusted the government," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.

Does this mean the totalitarian goons at Homeland Security will have to partner with paranoid Eric Holder to 'go after' MOST AMERICAN citizens? Here's a flash - the reason people don't 'trust' government is because they're doing a horrible job of governing.

By a 51%-46% margin, independents say Watergate was just politics.

I’m well over 40, and not much inclined to hide behind an “independent” stance - but you have to say, by 2014 standards Watergate was just politics.

Very successful politics by the Democrats, I might add . . .

I have often asked “What high crime or misdemeanor did Nixon (himself) commit.?’ I don’t know, I was out of town at the time. I’ve heard he fired Archibald Cox, ‘He LIED’ and HE committed a burglary. I just look at people say “but what crime did he commit?”

‘Here’s a flash - the reason people don’t ‘trust’ government is because they’re doing a horrible job of governing.’

Let me help you a little. People do not trust the government because they are not trustworthy. They lie, cheat, and they steal. Why would anyone trust common thugs? They like the protection their titles give them, they create crimes from whole cloth, shoot your dog and break your family financially when they try to defend you. They are like the peaceful Muzzies, they are fine when you can defend yourself, but in the dark of night they will cut off your head. That is your government at all levels. I am sure some people will say there are good public servants out there, just as they say there are peace loving Muzzies out there. Sure.
