Protesters and police have clashed in central Kiev as authorities moved to clear the protest camp on Independence Square.
Black smoke billowed over the city centre as protesters set fire to barricades and hurled cobblestones at police and interior ministry troops who arrived to remove tents and barricades on Thursday morning.
Clashes erupted when municipal workers equipped with cranes and backed by police and interior ministry troops arrived to clear tents on Khreshyatik street, the city's main thoroughfare, early on Thursday
Ukrainian media reported the fires had been extinguished and many tents removed by early afternoon.
It is not known how many were injured in the clashes.
The protest camp on Independence Square, or the Maidan, as it is commonly known, was the epicentre of the revolution that led to the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovych in February.

Aren’t they precious? Both are regularly quoting Russian-language publications, yet no clue what Ukraine is and why Russia is obsessed with it. Malignant Russism of the brain?
If I told any one of my clients that my “research” consists of following Twitter he’d reply, “let’s make this your last paycheck.”
Russian agents again stirring up trouble as Putin prepares for more war in east.
I’ll say one thing for you, you picked the right screen name. Maybe when you get older you’ll learn how discuss things like an adult.
Those on the streets were piling up wood stacks to see them through the winter several weeks ago..... Mayor tried to move them awhile ago to no avail. Had formal meetings with the leaders etc. without any success in getting them to move out.
They’re being funded somehow.....follow the money would certainly apply.
Continue to toe the Kremlin line, and you’ll get nothing of the sort from me, Ivan.
Soros isn't the only one spreading his wealth around in Ukraine politics...there's so many working behind the scenes....."the enemy of my enemy is my friend"....runs throughout Ukraine, on the ground and in their politics.
With all the deep corruption there can you imagine the money flowing through hands!!!
Well they said that back in May..but the money flowed nonetheless.......
IMF isn’t interested in Ukraine itself....they want it as a debtor nation to funnel revenues through to the corporations and entity vultures waiting on the sidelines.
Already billions have flowed through Ukraine....and still they can’t control their people in the East nor in Kiev...and their army continues to be without what funds were intended for.
So there’s many on the take in Ukraine.....nothings changed except how they are funneling it and the faces.
Says the stupid PaulBot who has posted to anti-semitic articles accusing Israel and the United States of false flag terror attacks.
You're nothing but a propagandist and a pathological liar. Barely human, in my opinion.
What do you know? You get your news by watching YouTube videos posted from Islamist/Iranian websites and Russkie TV.
It is soviet Rabies. They got bit by Russian media and the disease went straight to the brain.
Not far off the mark. They’re like zombies. “McCain. McCaaiinnn.”
Likewise... Then I started noticing the wild spin, and started researching.
While some of us have been monitoring Putin's moves on Ukraine and Georgia on thread-after-thread for over 14 years.
So why did Ukraine shell the hospital in Donetsk today?
How much went to Russia to re-pay Ukrainian debt to Russia?
It was "billions" wasn't it?
It was almost like a bribe -- hey Russia, don't attack, the West will loan this money to help them pay off their debt to you...then..they will be indebted to Western bankers
Don't let guys like tclaf lead you around by the nose with his constant RT slant on EVERYTHING Ukraine.
It is not as simple (Western powers trying to take over Ukraine by stealth or something) as the Putin-bot would have people around here believe it to be.
As for RT information....it's wise to know what both sides of any issue is saying so I will continue to view RT and other foreign news sites as well as our own, which if you care to look you will find well informed American, and other national leaders, speaking and debating ‘there’ because our news sources won't air differing views that aren't in line with obamas agenda.
Furthermore if leading journalists, politicians and news agencies are viewing RT and commenting favorable or not...so too will I and others. Without knowing what others are saying and debating you will only have a closed view of what's occurring.
You are mistaken to think that people on FR are being lead by any...Freepers are free thinkers period, and don't need to be lead nor do they have a desire to be so. But they are certainly free to agree with others point of view based on their own conclusions and perceptions.
The situation with Ukraine is not simple no matter what view one has, and most have several because it's so layered with many moving parts and parties involved. Additionally Ukraine is a pivot nation that many have vested interest in. The last thing it's about is what the citizens of Ukraine want.
