I believe the Republican party was formed from the bones of the Wig party. If I recall, a significant number of power players defected to the new party. Essentially, they dissolved one party and left the old fogies behind and the vital bits formed the new party. But it was not “new” in total. It was the distilled viable elements of the old party and none (?) of the bad stuff. It would take the combined efforts of Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz and several other players to make a viable party that wouldn’t automatically mean a Democrat win.
Sarah Palin is not even a player.
Geez I love her to bits and she is influential but she is no longer in the game.
The Freesoil party was the transitional party that drew in abolitionist democrats and Whigs who were sick of their do nothing party. They were a bit of a catalyst and later became republicans.
They only lasted a few years but greatly affected politics without ever electing anything more than representatives.
I agree with your assessment. (But it was the Whig — not Wig — Party.)
It would take the combined efforts of Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz and several other players to make a viable party that wouldnt automatically mean a Democrat win.
Someone else gets it!
The new Republicans were sick and tired of the slave states and their influence and the constant diluting of the census. The Whigs weren’t getting it done, they were too old and too intrenched (sound familiar?).
Abolition of slavery was taking hold because that is what our Declartion and Constitution stated.
Reconstruction after the war would have much better had Lincoln not be assassinated. The Dems kept figting the Civil War with Jim Crow, Dred Scott, KKK, segregation, etc.
yes but back then a party consisted of constituents. we have and i agree whole hardheartedly de-funded us from the pubs. i don’t give them any money. they are beholden to the only funders. big business/commerce union. how do you fix that.
