As many as 12 Western soldiers -- including several Americans -- were shot in a deadly attack on high-level officials visiting a military academy Tuesday near Afghanistan's capital.
U.S. officials told NBC News that most, if not all, of the victims were American. They said a lone gunman opened fire at a group that included American officials at the Camp Qargha training facility.
Three Western soldiers died - including a high-ranking officer - and about a dozen were wounded, according to senior U.S. defense officials. The officials said the death toll is expected to rise.
Earlier, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed "fatalities" after "a shooting incident involving ISAF and Afghan troops," but could not confirm the number of victims or their nationalities.
Gen. Mohammmad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry, tweeted in Dari that the gunman was wearing an Afghan military uniform and was shot dead after opening fire on Afghan and international colleagues.
Germany's military said in a statement that 15 troops had been wounded in the attack, including a German brigadier general, according to The Associated Press. Those details could not immediately be independently confirmed by NBC News.

What does this bring the death count to in Obama’s wars?
The media kept those numbers in the headlines while Bush was president.
Afghanistan is lost, just like Iraq is lost and this time it is 0bama’s fault - not that anybody (and especially the Propaganda Organs) will care.
We were not fighting Islam in those places.
Doesn’t this affair remind you of what happened in Ft. Hood where an ‘American’ muzzie officer murdered fellow soldiers?
Expect this type of violence to repeat itself when muzzies are around, at home and abroad.
No More Blood for Opium.
My first thought also. One of Zippy's "gun free zones" in a war zone.
Zer0 is wasting time, money and esp. lives by continuing to have troops there.
He ruined any chance to make a difference there when he announced a exit date.
Pull all the troops out. It’s inevitable to revert back to Taliban rule. Get out and let it happen before any more lives are lost.
Workplace violence? Like the attacks by Sgt. Akbar on an officers’ tent or Sgt. Nadil Hasan at Ft. Hood?
One of Obama’s first military decisions was to replace the third country nations working with US forces, mostly from the pacific, with Afgan’s and Iraqi’s. The reason the host country nationals were kept off the bases was for security reasons. There were no incidents during the Bush Administration on bases, or so few as to make very clear Obama’s personal hand in this directive to hire those we could not trust.
So....very sad.Prayers up.
